Anyone here ever seen "War of The Worlds?" I have no sympathy. Wipe 'em all out, as far as I'm concerned.

Seriously, though, that would be amazing if it does hit. I wonder what the position of Mars would be relative to the Earth at that time. If it's close to our orbit, it's conceivable that even amateur astronomers with decent telescopes would be able to at least detect a flash of light as it impacts.

I watched Shoemaker Levy 9 hit Jupiter back in 1994 from a backyard in Brisbane.

God, that must have been just spectacular! How big of a scope did you need? If you could see Shoemaker Levy with a small telescope, we should easily see this one hit Mars. Depending on what side of the planet it would hit. Wouldn't that be the killer, if it hit on the far side?

How intreseting. I hope the Martians find a place to hide. Perhaps under their oceans.

    Oh wait, sucks.

On a planetary scale the impact would be like hitting a mosquito with your car while speeding , but an object of this size can devastate life on earth.

I hope it lands far enough away from Curiosity that it won't cause any problems.

I hope it lands close enough that it gets an awesome pic off before it gets destroyed.

if it does hit we may be able to exspect some martian soil samples heading our way. Rocks from mars have hit earth before.

Actually, as long as it doesn't take out any of our probes, a comet hitting and blasting underground material into the martian sky might be hugely beneficial scientifically. Curiosity is barely scratching the surface with it's drill, and the crater it's in is old. A new crater where they can monitor in somewhat real time the material ejected from it upon impact could tell a huge story about the martian underground.
