    The US NSC sends a strong message to Italy to stop reaching sovereign decisions and adhere to American diktat to stop cooperating with China.

    The EU are also apparently alarmed at the Italian governments moves. But Italy and the EU are not having the best of relationship recently following the EU recent rejection of the Italian budget.

    I imagine Italy will ignore the reproach from both and proceed establishing closer relations with China. But time will tell...

    consider german is top exporter of good to china, not sure whats the deal with that.

    Italy, they have their own interest, and they are not stupid. so let them do what they want to do.

    I say we vacate that whole European mess, let them screw it up, then go rescue them from their next war and regain our place in their minds as their saviors for the next 40 years.

    I wonder, does Italy really stand to benefit that much from trade with China? (more open trade, I mean)

    What exactly is Italy going to export to China?

    I can see a lot of luxury goods to China's wealthy and upper middle class.

    (fashion clothes, handbags and sports cars, mostly, maybe higher priced wine)

    Chinese are probably going to want to buy a lot of property in Rome. Not all of that will be a good thing for Italy.
    (Expensive mansions will bring money to the Italian economy, while the buying up of investment properties to rent out will drain money from the economy in the long term)

    The US is fear mongering, the new US Ambassador to Australia did a similar thing, claiming Chinese loans are "payday" loans... which I think is going too far. Especially when you look at the amount of money owed to the IMF and World Bank... Chinese loans pale in comparison.

    China is the new USSR and Xi is the new Stalin. The purges will come.

    That said, Italy is an independent nation and the US has no business telling them how to conduct their affairs.

    Well said. What can Donald Trump do to help other countries? He is just a huge "black hole" eager to suck up money from all countries even US allies.

    With regard to the "direct warning" by U.S. National Security Council, who in Italy cares about it?

    Italians are still fascinated by "The Travels of Marco Polo" to China. They also want to revive the spirit of the ancient Silk Road that connected the Roman Empire and the ancient Chinese dynasties centuries before the discovery of the so-called New World.
