And you are willing to bet American cities that they won't be effective enough?

And if your gamble fails and millions of America are killed without any necessity for them being put in that situation in the first place, are you willing to personally suffer the consequences of that?

You seem to be pretty brave given the fact that you don't live in LA or Seattle to risk the lives of thenpeople there by not your own. Is it cowardice?

Not publicly, no, but US nuclear weapons doctrine was always planned around retaliating quid pro quo.

Who are you, Donald Trump!? Diplomacy, even Big Stick Diplomacy (which I am a fan of), does not work this way against a nuclear power.

Furthermore, the world's leader is not determined solely by the largest military power; even if China surpasses the US, the amount of nations we have under our thumb already combined along with us can easily destroy China. Public opinion matters; most people would support the US over China (why do you think we won the Cold War?)

And finally, what is the issue with letting China take a bit more land. Japan wouldn't have been an issue in WW2 if there hadn't been a Germany issue. If history lends us anything, China would take more and more land, other nations would denounce them, and eventually either their hostilities would continue to a nation like Australia or the US and we'll squash em, or they'll stop and be content with what they have.

An act of agression on an agressive nation will never play well. We bomb their navy, we look like the bad guys. They attack us and then we nuke em, now that's world diplomacy.

Why would I have any desire to live in Los Angeles or Seattle (though my wife and her family did live in Tacoma at one point). ?

You don't. But isn't it mighty convenient for you to be able to risk the lives of the people living in those cities while you are nice and safe in Nobody-(*)(*)(*)(*)ing-Cares, Arkansas?

    You are so brave.

So, a person should live in likely to be targeted areas to have a legitimate opinion on the U.S. engaging another major nation in major warfare?

    Very undemocratic of you.

    No problem

I think l didnt explain well that my original post was meant to prevent war. However admittedly in hindsight taking out the entite Chinese Navy aka Pearl Harbour is probably a good example of the fear level l have. That fear doesnt justify the horrific result the suggestion means.

I dont mind manning up when I'm clearly wrong. I'll pursue my fears of a growing...no accelerating Chinese military in a more measured way.

Thankyou to all posters. You've all opened my eyes to the complexities of such a conflict.

When your 'commander in chief', and I use that phrase advisedly, threatens China it isn't the Chinese you need to be afraid of, it's him. Furthermore if you were threatened, as China has been, how would you react?

Lol We couldn't beat China in the Korean conflict, or the Vietnam conflict. Why do you think we can do it now? Obviously you are terminal and looking to go out with a boom

We could've beaten the Chinese in either one. But the great fear was that if we committed to doing so that the Soviets would respond by moving against our alies in Western Europe.

If you are going to launch an unprovoked and totally unnecessary nuclear first strike on a nation that could result in millions of your own countrymen dying, then you should at least be willing to bear the consequences of that.

Instead, you bravely sit behind a computer screen hundreds of miles from danger. May the country salute your courage.

    Why?

Wasn't it Patton who said that "Heroism isn't dying for your country it's making some other son of a (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) die for his country"

Way to take a real hero's quote out of context.
