I think the floodgates should be opening up quick now....clusters, ATACMs,F16s....etc....plenty of Orc casualties soon.

I'm still trying to figure out what this conflict has to do with the United States.... except for using up all our tactical weapon stocks so China can walk into Taiwan unopposed.

 

Over 50 years after the end of the Vietnam War unexploded cluster bombs are still causing serious injuries and death to civilians including children who think they are toys. 120 countries have banned their use to include many NATO countries like the Uk, France and Germany. I can only believe Ukraine is struggling if the US has decided this weapon is needed.

 

CLUSTER BOMBS are NOT MINES. NOT MINES.... GET IT? MINES and CLUSTER BOMBS are entirely different things. There is an international agreement against the use of mines because undetonated mines just sit there until someone sets them off. The US developed command-detonated mines and mines which expire and blow up, but it was too late to avoid the international agreement. DPICM is the standard artillery round used in many armies, including the US.

 

Or, they sense that Russia is faultering and want to increase the odds that Ukraine can take advantage. Could help end the war quicker or Ukraine is struggling. Will be interesting to see what actually happens this year.

 

Yes unexploded mines are still being dug up long after the Vietnam War but this thread is about the US sending a very deadly weapon to Ukraine that is known to have serious consequences for civilians.

Based on what I have been told the cluster munitions Ukraine is getting are deployed from artillery shells and have a failure to detonate rate under 1%, Further, it is their country. If they think they need to do this that is their call.

It is a pity you aren't as animated by the MASSIVE minefields Russia has been laying in a country it invaded for months. Then there are the bombs & artilelry shells it is dropping & firing. Those will be killing Ukranian children for decades after Russia is driven from its conquered territory. But hey, Ukraine is going to deploy a few cluster munitions to free their own nation, so THAT clearly deserves your attention.

 

Apparently they are very effective on troops in open trenches.

 

The way Biden explained it, it's both to help keep Ukraine sufficiently stocked up while we (and Europe, presumably) work to ramp up shell production to meet their demand, and it will help them advance in this counteroffensive. Obviously we don't want them stuck during this window of opportunity.

It's also a nice stopgap while we work on getting them upgraded to F-16s, I would think.

And yes, it is ultimately up to them what they want to use on their land in a war. If they deem the risks of unexploded ordnance to be worth it, then so be it. We're certainly not forcing them to use these munitions.

 

DPICM is widely used. It is a mainstay of our artillery forces and rotary wing support.

 

First and foremost it's a huge moneymaker for the "military industrial complex".
Second Russia is enemy of the west, of which we are a large part.
Also saving people from fascist aggression is always worthwhile.

It takes two to tango... an Putin has no interest in negotiating or dancing. But why we spend billions defending Ukraine's borders while we leave our own wide open is... puzzling.

 

In fact, the topic is not worth a damn. For several reasons
First, cluster munitions are not superweapons. Secondly, Ukraine already had cluster munitions and has been using them in the war since 2014. Thirdly, the Americans decided to supply these munitions to Ukraine, because the Soviet ones of the same type had already run out. And fourthly, the Americans decided to supply this ammunition to Ukraine, because there is already very little left that can be sent.
