    The Boston Police and Fire departments are investigating an arson at a Boston church after a Virgin Mary statue was set on fire Saturday night.

    Police responded at about 10 p.m. to a report of a fire near Saint Peter Parish in the city's Dorchester neighborhood.

    Upon arrival, officers saw that a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary had been set on fire.

    Police spoke with Boston firefighters, who said that an unknown suspect had set fire to plastic flowers, which were in the hands of the statue, causing the face and upper body of the statue to be burned.

    "I was shocked. (There's) disappointment, sadness," said Fr. John Curran, the pastor of Saint Peter Parish. "The image of Our Lady is so important for us and our faith. It's such a contradiction to her love. Mary would never desecrate anyone, never hurt anyone, only offer them the peace and love of Jesus. I think that's where it really hits us in our hearts."

    A Boston firefighter, who said he was among those who responded to the fire, shared a photo of the burned statue with NewsCenter 5.

    Makes sense. The virgin Mary was a well known supporter of the confederacy and slave owner. They had better beware. I don't think they want to really piss off the devout. There will be push back.

    Do know what form of bacteria did this? That will be important I us to assigned proper blame. If we were in Northern Ireland one could say it was the Orangemen, the protestants. If this was Moskva 1925 we can say with a 99.999999999999999999 % certainty that it was the Godless Commie scum.

    Yes the Bishop said all of things about reconciliation, peace and togetherness that we would assume and hope that Christ would have said. Problem is I am not a priest nor Christ so I want to know who did ( what group) so we can punish the scum turds.

    We do not know if it was BLM but they should be people of interest.

    I always thought of the Virgin Mary as a racist, not once have I read any stories bout her hanging with any homies.

    I have been saying that this protest movement has lost it's compass and is definately losing sympathy.

    Still we can guess but we do not know who did it.

    Yep. This. We have no idea who did this or what their motives were. Regardless, I hope they get arrested and charged for their vandalism.

    Still . . . looks like a stone statue and that it was likely the flowers they set on fire. Doesn't look like there are any cracks, so I doubt the fire did any actual damage to the statue. It will probably be fine after they clean it. I hope they catch the culprits in time to force them to clean it themselves. And make them personally arrange the replacement flowers for good measure.

    Some community service time having to sit at a table next to the statue and explain its historical significance to passers bye would also be poetic.

    Muslims don't generally have statues. Setting fire to an "Islamic religious item" would generally involve just trying to burn down a mosque . . . which, yeah, has definitely happened.

    We don't know who did it or why. So far all we know is that they were wrong to do so. Looks like that statue will be fine after a cleaning and that no permanent damage was done -- it was probably the plastic flowers that they set on fire. Again, hope the catch the vandals in time to make them take care of cleaning/replacing both.
