Wade Davis: Former NFL Player Should Inspire Gay Athletes to Come out Another facet of society: sports. There are 1625 players that suite up for an NFL game on any given Sunday. If 3% of the population is gay that means there are 48 gay people suiting up each week for an NFL game. That almost an entire team. I hope we see more gay athletes coming out.
That's not necessarily true. That 3% (I actually heard it was closer to 1%) you're talking about is a general number that applies to the entire population overall. It does not account for the fact that different groups within that population will appeal to different demographics and will have different percentages comprising their makeup. For example, 52% of the population is female but you won't typically see a 52% female audience at a mixed martial arts event. It will be predominantly male. So it's not unreasonable to assume that Mr. Davis might be the only guy in the whole sport that is actually gay. Or at the very most, one of no more than 3-5.
We will see more gay people everywhere in society the coming years. Many who have been hiding (or would have hidden years ago) are going to come out in the future (especially young people).
There's nothing "reasonable" about an assumption based on nothing but stereotypes. What makes you think you know the demographics of gay men so well that you can assume they would not be attracted to NFL sports?
Yeah, you are correct. The stereotypes don't fit. I'm in the military, and I can tell anyone that all gay people aren't what they might imagine. People should know by now, that they stereotypes are mostly laughable (material for comedians). This guy has his head on "straight" and he is gay. He is one of many military members I have known or known of, who don't exactly fit the stupid stereotypes people like to throw at homosexuals.
