London Times’ diplomatic editor Roger Boyes believes world leaders should be more aware of the dangers posed to the world as violence in Egypt and Syria escalates.

Quoting Boyes, “ ‘The direction of events in Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Iran should keep us awake at night. History is taking a dangerous turn.' also, ‘The region certainly cannot sustain two wars — Syria’s bloody insurgency and a near-civil war in Egypt — without wrecking established peace treaties and the normal mechanisms for defusing conflict.’ ”

Boyes’ worries are not exclusively his own. People of reason understand the avarice of the United States’ defense industry, and how, with the cooperation of the hawks of both the Democrats and Republicans, these corporate giants have made trillions of dollars exploiting regional conflicts since the Korean War.

With the U.S. withdrawals from Iraq and soon Afghanistan, our military/industrial/congressional complex is beginning to smell the potential for profit in Syria and Egypt, coupled with an opportunity for a Republican return to power.

As a campaign issue in 2012, Mitt Romney claimed it was the duty of the U.S. to end Iran’s nuclear program. Unfortunately for the war mongers in Congress, Romney lost the election. But the chemical attack by the Syrian government on rebels is offering the GOP new hope to make war on Iran.

As the White House ponders the U.S. response to the attack, it is no secret the hawks want to see U.S. intervention. But the Congressional Republicans must oppose the decision of the President, either way. For this reason, it is imperative to the Republican Party that Obama acts without Congressional approval.

With public opinion against further U.S. involvement in the Middle East’s constant unrest, the voters will surely turn against the Democrats for Obama’s decision to send military assistance to either the Syrian rebels or Assad.

For the Republicans, the defense industry, and for all of the war mongers in the U.S. any new military action taken by this country in the Middle East will be a win, and they hope this win will carry through to 2016.
