NASA went to the Moon. It can be summed up in one word... rocks.

The rocks match the chemical make up of some meteorites that are found. I collect meteorites, the ones of lunar origin are rare and expensive.

Also if we didn't go to the Moon how is it observatories able to use lasers to measure the Moon's orbit? The lasers reflect of mirror left by the Apollo astronauts.

There is quite a simple answer and that is war. Our space race was developed on a war footing against Russia. Once we got there and Russia decided not to go, the political will to spend more money on it also died. It is not terribly expensive compared to other programs. We have only spent about 1/2 trillion dollars from 1958 to 2011. We could easily do it again.

If we again are faced with a military need to go there, we will.

 

We are a declining power. 40 years ago we went to the moon, and now, with much better technology, the US can't even put a man in orbit.

I remember last year during the Republican primaries Newt Gingrich was widely mocked for suggesting a moon base. As a people, we're done with space. The Chinese will be the ones going back to the moon, and I assume to the rest of the solar system.

Yep. Robots are great for exploring other worlds. They're far hardier and cheaper to send to another world to stay long-term. Apollo was great back when robotics were more primitive, and of course when the space race was fully apace

Robots are doing things on Mars now that we still can't hope to send humans to do..
