The movie Gladiator. The response of the growds to the fight in the arena in Rome must have been the most important thing to the dominators back in that time. It seems that nothing fundamentally has changed in this time. Today it's called politics and the crowds have mass communications and respond to the information. The arena are now the many places in cyberspace.

What would happen if you should stop responding to the information politics puts out? (in old Roman time that would mean the growds would stop cheering and clapping)
Can you imagen a circus were crowds just sit and watch the show without cheering and clapping? No more emotional response from the audience would make their acts almost useless. What would happen if you start doing this in this time with politics? Their momentum are their emotions and the responses from society.

So society can force politicians/politics from stop acting. It would make society/the system more civilized, normalized and finally the progress a lot of people want to see.

This is a beautiful thought, but since people are natural born gossips and newshounds, it'll never happen. Just like people will never stop slowing down to check-out a car wreck on the highway.

    What a great analogy!

And true. We can go back even further, even if you see the Bible as fiction like the gladiator, and see how the crowds were worked and stoked to scream "crucify him, crucify him" Much like the attack on the confederate flag.

It isn't really politics any more, not where two parties or more argue and debate what's good for the country, it has become image warfare. Obama struts into the Oval Office and declares his opponents "enemies", has Harry Reid take over as chief (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) who lies on the floor of the senate about an opponents tax situation and doesn't even get scolded...and that was the beginning of the most fractious congress in history. It is not going to improve any time soon.

We cannot have a madman killing people, it has to be made into a race issue and a 150 year old flag, a part of the nation's history is turned into a hated symbol with death threats...the new weapon. Create an issue through unethical journalism over a freaking cake and liberal amerika has to launch death threats. Further, Obama says nothing, but is quick to let his mouth run when any black kid gets shot.

American politics has always been filthy and negative, attack ads have become monstrous, and the voter simply eats it up, not realizing the ethics and morals of the nation are being flushed down the toilet.

As long as its a gladiatoral contest with metaphoric blood, the plebs will eat it up with relish.

Maybe I'm missing the point but I would disagree. I think the politicians would love it if we all stopped paying attention. They could do any damn thing they please.
