So maybe our resident conservatives would like to explain why picking on children is okay?
    http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way...weets-11-year-old-nails-national-anthem-again

Something pretty magical happened at last night's NBA finals: Sebastien de la Cruz, the 11-year-old who sang the national anthem on Tuesday, was back on Thursday to prove his critics wrong.

Following his first performance, de la Cruz was barraged on Twitter with racist remarks, questioning why a young, Latino boy in a charro outfit should be singing the Star Spangled Banner. (We won't repeat any of the slurs, but The Daily Dot has a collection.)

With a maturity that belies his young age, de la Cruz told KENS-TV that he was ignoring those tweets.

"My father and my mama told me you should never judge people by how they look," he said.

The Spurs responded by inviting him back for Game 4 last night. He was introduced by San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, and President Obama also previewed his performance via Twitter.

De la Cruz delivered a stellar rendition — in his mariachi outfit — to rousing applause.

The vast majority of the fans in the arena were white.....and he received "rousing applause".......so what's the problem? As for the tweets......how do you know they are from "conservatives"?

Good point. They could have come from blacks, who aren't known for their buddy buddy relationship with Hispanics.

Who are these resident conservatives that have stated that picking on children is OK? I must have missed those posts, but I would certainly be interested in checking them out. Can you provide links?

I didnt hear the whole rendition, but only a snippet and some discussion on the radio this morning. From what I heard he did a good, respectful rendition of the anthem....unlike many of the celebrities we've seen in recent years who feel they have to add their "touch" to it.

    Thumbs up to him.

    It isn't ok.

Yeah I think people just want something to be angry about - and stupid cuts across all political ideologies. 45 years ago Hendrix dared to play the song on a guitar with distortion. He was flogged for that - now it is seen as one of the truly iconic versions of the anthem.

I am not excited with this new trend of national attention towards social media posts. It's like they caught on to the fact they can use these for political positioning. There is no reason for anyone to pay attention to Tweeters. This is the Internet, it has always been a cesspool.

They are Miami Heat fans, trying to criticize whatever they can.

As a resident conservative, I think it's great that a Hispanic kid with a great voice is singing the U.S. National anthem in a Mariachi outfit. It's an indicator that the melting pot is working.

I don't recall anyone picking on the kids in those discussions. Got any links, all I remember was the BSA itself taking harsh criticism for it's decision. Criticizing the BSA is fair if you disagree with it's moves.

Update: De La Cruz is coming back for an encore. You'll hear him again Thursday night for Game 4.

Correction: Sebastien De La Cruz is 11 years old, not 10, as previously reported. We regret the error.

I'm sorry, but did I miss the memo about the dress code for singing the national anthem? The outfit is just a red herring that individuals are using to convince themselves and others that their criticism is not racially motivated. I don't recall anyone ever (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ing about what bagpipers wear on the occassions when they play the national anthem. Sorry, but if you have a problem with the outfit, then you do have a racial bias. Racial bias is not exactly the same as racism, but it is still wrong.

Wow, this is pretty (*)(*)(*)(*)ed up... some of the comments were just dumb and perhaps not from people who seriously have an issue with him because he's Mexican, but commenting on his dress that matches his heritage... but some of these people are just racist "patriots." Like, really? Last time I checked America was a melting pot, and Mexicans are allowed in here if they're born or have the proper docs. This is the ignorance of some people who "think"(and I use the word 'think' lightly and loosely) that they are superior just because they're "American". Guess what, your ancestors were illegal immigrants, it's possible that your parents were illegal immigrants, and for the black folks that made comments on here about this boy..., just goes to show that all your getting defensive over slavery and people who aren't black using the "N"word, is hypocritical of you and that now you are oppressing a group of people after you've whined and cried about your ancestors being oppressed. Oppressing people was passed on through you through oppression!

Here, Sarah E (@lizzyelectric) appears to be telling off "@uncle_rico" by stating that hell is a place for racists, not San Antonio. I just figured I'd point that out in case this twitter user is receiving any incorrectly targeted negative attention.

Even while ignorant people like those that tweeted remarks rambled on, he ignored them and kept on going. This is a lesson for the world. Ignore the haters and let them live in a world of ignorance while those of us focused on the positive get things done! Great job Sebastien! The world is changing. He is right to be proud and embrace his family heritage and no one has the right to take that from him. His performances on America's Got Talent were great to watch. You can stil find them on Youtube. I suggest searching for them. Humility - it's a wonderful attribute.

I am a Lakota Sioux veteran. For many years I have had the honor of singing the National Anthem at many pow wows and tradional gatherings throughout the country, many times in front of thousands of people and once at the United Nations. And each and every time I dressed in Traditional Lakota dress(Eagle feathers, paint, staff, etc) I dare anyone to say I dont have the right or I should wear the American dress of T shirt and jeans.

I was proud to see that young man sing in his outfit. And even more to see him go out and do it again. Showed all you haters what a clusters of (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s you are.

If you have the time to post those racist comments then please take a few minutes and google:

Porcupine Singers Lakota Flag song youtube.

These songs are for the American Flag and for its veterans. And they are sung at ALL of our pow wows and gathering. ANd We are dressed in Traditional garb when we do it.

Flag song: The American flag shall fly forever more and under it the Nation shall grow, so I do this.

The veterans song: They are charging with it. With the American flag they are charging. With bravery they are charging.

I hope that young man coming out and singing in his outfit pissed you haters off. What he did took courage. More than most of you haters have.

What my problem is the filth and hate spewing from people's mouths. If you have a problem with what this kid was wearing while singing the National Anthem or because this kid was of Mexican decent then you have the right to dislike it but voice it like you have some sense. You might get your point across better and be understood better than the racist and culture rants. I can understand how some might feel about it but geez, it's a little boy for goodness sakes. @ What if a Irish, Italian, a Greek, or a White African American, or a Black African American born of Black African parents sing the Anthem?

If the kid is an American he can sing the Anthem. What (*)(*)(*)(*) me off is the ILLEGAL immigrants waving their Mexican flag in parades and demonstrations for American citizenship. @

Mariachi outfits are southwestern and existed before the Rockefeller family allegedly "commissioned" them.

Southwestern mariachi and banda are a result of cultural assimilation - ever notice the prevalence of the accordion? The accordion, which is hardly a Spanish instrument was introduced, along with the common waltz rhythm, by German, Wendish, Polish and other European immigrants who brought them to Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and the rest of the southwest.

Ever heard of Miguel Antonio Otero, Jr? He was a WWI aviation ace who married pioneer aviatrix Katherine Stinson. How about Juan Abamillo, Juan A. Badillo, or Antonio Cruz y Arocha, Alexandro de la Garza, among many others? They were defenders at the Alamo, fighting on the Texas side. We could also discuss the Baca family, early partners with the Goldwater family in a small store in the southwest, one of whose members singlehandedly stood against outlaws bent on robbing a town. Or how about General Vallejo of the Bear Flag Republic?

You don't like Latinos? Well, be prepared to hate some of San Francisco's oldest, wealthiest, and most prominent "Irish" and "Italian" families who intermarried with the Californios.

Oh I see, so ignoring all the flat racist comments about the kid in general, its his "outfit" that really offends people as americans. After all its his "outfit" that made all these people just freak out with overtly racist comments in general with ever so few of them referring to his clothes, but ok lets put that aside for a moment and focus on the "outfit."

So the boy decided to wear an outfit that made him feel proud and ready to sing at an american sporting event in front of thousands of people and that made you lose it.

Hes a child guy, a child. He chose to wear something special to him which helped him get up and sing in front of all those people. And maybe on another day or in another time, it would have been fine because hes just a boy and people let stupid things like that which don't really matter go.

But because its the internet and everyone has a set of balls behind a computer screen, a bunch of people decided to trash racist talk a little child. How many of you would had the nuts to say to that kids face. Not many I dare say. And why is that you think. Because hes just an innocent kid, who doesn't deserve so called "adults" saying horrible things like that for no real reason.

His "outfit," that's what you have, his "outfit."

Don't be ridiculous. Its not like everyone said something sophisticated, professional, or intelligent regarding their disagreement regarding a child's choice of clothing. Almost all of that was just flat racist comments over the internet. Because its over the internet. There was no more intelligence behind than this thing than a guy who felt like tweeting something cus he was bored or had no one to talk to.

Look you wanna go on and on about how his clothing choice offended you then whatever, that's fine, it just your opinion. But don't sit there and pretend like more than 1% of those racist comments were aimed at some silly indignation over an outfit. Most if not all of that was mindless racist talk over the internet to either sound cool, feel like they belong, boredom or what have you.

We both know what really happened here and you can try to defend ridiculous racist talk and make it seem like something more than that, but anyone who stops and reads what half of what was said can tell you its nothing more than that. Worthless garbage comments aimed at innocent child.

But oh, there's the "outfit." Please.

As far as his dress, looked fine. How do "Americans" dress? Like George Washington? Abraham Lincoln? Steve Jobs? Perhaps like Native Americans?

    A. W. Daniels that's just it, up till the 60's when immigrants came to the US, they did their best to "melt" into the common US culture. It wasn't till after that, they started trying to keep their own culture and introduce that to the US culture and change it. IF you don't like where your going and want to keep your language, dress and habits, why did you bother coming here at all? A great example is the California liberal culture that is invading surrounding states. Those Californians that didn't like where they were from and moved, well when they moved they brought the same damn culture with them.

Rexford Dundon A. W. Daniels Actually folks came and brought their food, language, social customs with them. Some brought Protestantism, some brought Catholicism, some brought Islam. They brought their farming, hunting, brewing, distilling, economic, and industrial techniques too. They all joined and fought in our military. We are great as a nation because we incorporated everything they had to offer.

Seeing as how the majority of negative comments are coming from blacks I would have to say, in my opinion that perhaps this is just a way for you to feel better about yourself. I guess having to live with the racism you encounter you have to dump on someone else.

Good for you Sebestian, you sang it beautifully and you looked great. And I'm not Hispanic.

This part of the article sums it all up.

Wonder what people would say if the woman was white and she said that the future is white. She'd get labeled a nazi by leftist morons in a hurry.

But a Mexican woman does it?

    NP. She's a hero.

    -----------------------------------------------

It sucks that the boy received those comments, but attacking whites with ethnic supremacy comments like "The future is brown" only makes matters worse and pisses people off.

I swear if anyone ever says that to my face I'll get hauled off to jail or get my a** beaten because I will punch that person man/woman or child in the ******* face.:steamed:

I don't think people should blow this out of proportion, there were a few bigoted comments but were pretty much thumped all around.

As for the kid being "Mexican", I think people forget that there is and was a significant hispanic presence and influence on everything from the names of our cities to architecture in CA, NV, TX and NM.

You know, since they were Spain and Mexico.

    Heheh....

Can you provide links to the racist posts the rightwingers are always submitting that you are referring to? I must somehow always miss those. I certainly realize that the occasional idiot might write something racist on the forum every now and again, but if the right wingers are always doing it then you should have no trouble at all documenting your assertion with links to a few posted today. If you unable to, of course, then you are by definition a liar.
