Obviously, the complexion of the race has plenty of time to change, particularly through Trump developments, on his various legal fronts. But assuming that things go in the direction that they currently appear to be headed, can we anticipate who Trump will choose to be his Vice Presidential running mate? My first thought, is that he would want a woman, to better compete with the Biden - Harris ticket. The one who most naturally comes to mind, with some foreign relations experience, would be Nikki Haley. I'll even admit, that she might do quite well, in her debate matchup, against Harris.

But one thing that gives me reservations about that pick is that, after Pence, Trump is going to want a V.P. who is loyal to him, above all else, and I'm not sure if that describes Haley. A more sure bet, would be Marjorie Taylor Greene, but I think even Trump would recognize that as a losing ticket. So, maybe the lesson that Trump takes from January 6th, is not that he needs someone who is even more of a doormat, than Pence, but merely that he needs to begin grooming his #2, for betraying our Constitution, at an earlier stage, in his term?

Other thoughts, and nominations of other names?

Trump had to settle on Pence after a lot of other Republicans turned him down. If I were Pence, I’d have turned him down like the first 7 or 8. For 2024, Maybe J.D. Vance from Ohio, a Trump chosen candidate. He was one of a few of the high-profile races involving Trump chosen candidates that didn’t lose last year.

Trump could go with one of his old cabinet members or someone clear out of the blue like his chosen candidates of Oz and Walker. Whoever it is will be because of loyalty, not experience or qualifications.

Who ever it will be, they will have to be no threat to his need for attention nor eclispe him in anyway or form. They will have to follow Pence's sycophancy and that's a hard act to follow.

Given the damage the Dems have been doing to the constitution for the last 80 years them complaining of Trump doing likewise is classic pot kettle only worse. Frankly Trump Desantis would be a dream ticket and anoint Desantis as the heir apparent. And leftist heads exploding everywhere.

So, you think, once again, even with the abortion narrative, the GOP probably fronts two white men? Vance just got elected, so it seems too soon, to tap him for a promotion. And not only were Oz and Walker too unpopular to win in their own, very winnable contests, but neither one has any political experience. Remember, Trump is not a young man, himself. And hamburgers are one of his favorite foods. I acknowledge that, usually, V. P. picks are not given much consideration, by voters. But, even though I'll be the first to admit that I would not be excited at the prospect of a Harris Presidency, a Walker Presidency, would be downright frightening! Is Kanye West, a possibility, as well?

I'm still thinking it is going to be a woman. But if it were someone along the lines you sketch out, I would think that Virginia's Governor, Glen Youngkin, might be a possibility. He is, at least, a good speaker (but is he too smart, to get on that ship, headed straight for the rocks?).

I guess there is no reason, at this point, that couldn't happen. But I've got news for you-- that is a bad dream team!

She would check both the female, and the black boxes, but has no political experience. Not only would she be first in line for the Presidency, but Trump's background, such as it is, even having been President, does not seem to stand scrutiny as being sufficient for both he and his running mate. That is, I think he will want a real politician on his ticket. Besides, Repubs are not supposed to be about "checking boxes," and the less political credibility Trump's running mate has, the greater the appearance that, if it is a woman or minority, the person was chosen for just that reason.

it should 100% be a woman. Biden picking Harris fulfilled its purpose, it got him more female and more black votes. I know credentials are whats supposed to matter, but sorry folks, that isn't how the current world works. Biden got 57% of women votes and 45% of man votes.

Those are good points. and people probably would see it that way but she is very smart and an excellent speaker. Trump also had no political experience. That was kind of his selling point. Maybe they could use that angle. I dunno. I personally am hoping he doesn't get primaried but it seems likely to happen. Regardless of who it is, I think the VP should be the opposite gender. I mean in all seriousness though, ANYONE the GOP has that isn't white is gonna be referred to as a "prop" by the other side. There is no way around that label and I don't think that should stop them from doing that anyway.

He isn't getting primaried. DeSantis will get destroyed if he actually runs

A VP candidate that can draw in a # of votes from people who weren't already going to vote for Trump, would be the smart way to go

LOL! She has zero actual qualifications, but she can shoot off 1000s of RW talking points at will and seemingly "own" the Dems. This makes her great in MAGA world.

In reality, he needs someone who is prepared to play doormat, and, possibly fall guy. Now, who would have low enough self esteem to do that? I don't know. Maybe Hawley?

    1) I don't think anyone that could be VP would be dumb or doormat-ish enough to not certify (as Trump learned the hard way)
    2) I don't think it matters if she has no experience being a swamp creature, thats actually a PLUS
    3) she does own them pretty hard but lets not give her too much credit shall we? She owns them on super common sense talking points like meritocracy over affirmative action and that kind of thing. I also don't agree with ALL of her views, but I think her intelligent speech would compliment, well lets just call it his more rugged demeanor
    4) I see you recommended another white dude. Man you guys really seem to hate the idea of some more diversity in the GOP huh? Lets just call this speculation as I don't want to put words in your mouth. I'm speculating you folks don't like that because the more diversity they have, the less of a grip the other party will have on certain groups of people. To be clear, I'm not saying you said or think that, I'm just saying thats what I speculate

I think that label would not have credibility, if it were to Nikki Haley, it was attempting to be applied. She has legitimate political experience: served as both a Governor, and an a U.N. ambassador. I half wonder if she might not have considered the potential V.P. spot, as her plan B, from the start.

You are making a huge assumption.

    Whoever said life was fair?

Trump's lawyer and "fixer," Michael Cohen, was sent to prison for supporting Trump's lies and misappropriating Trump campaign funds to keep a porn star quiet about her affair with Trump.

The Trump Network, excuse me, Fox News was fined $787.5 million for trumpeting Trump's lies about the 2020 Presidential election and spreading lies about voting machines. Fox faces another threat for spreading Trump's lies -- a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit filed by another voting technology company, Smartmatic.

Now we learn that Mike Lindell, the MyPillow founder and Trump ally who has been a leading voice in pushing conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election, must pay $5 million to a software forensics expert who debunked a series of false claims.

The Republican Party lost big time in the 2022 mid-term elections because Trump-endorsed candidates who were voicing Trump's many lies lost. The GOP was expecting a sweep in the Senate and House elections. The Democrats increased their majority in the Senate, and, because small, rural states outnumber large industrialized states, they gained a four-seat majority in the House. Less educated rural voters form the base of the Republican Party.

Trump has told his Big Lie to millions of Americans over a thousand times while leading an insurrection against our elected government when he was President.

Trump has not been indicted for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection attempt.

Trump has not been indicted for his theft of hundreds of pages of classified documents that caused a FBI search warrant of his Mar-a-Lago residence.

Trump has not been indicted for interfering in Georgia's state elections.

Trump has been indicted for using campaign funds to pay off his porn star mistress, but that is the weakest case against him. His lawyers will not even break a sweat ridding Trump of that arrest.

In terms of serious criminal charges, nothing has happened to Trump. He is the leader of the Republican Party and the leading Republican candidate for the Presidency in 2024. The rural base of the party is infatuated with him.

    Go figure!

There are already some announced candidates, beside Trump, so there will be a Primary. Considering the GOP is out of the White House, it seems to me that there could hardly not be a Republican Primary.

I don't think the VP could change anyone's mind about Trump, but if someone were only lukewarm on the idea of voting for him, this person could give added motivation to, say, a woman, if the VP was a woman.

Wow-- another person, predicting an all white male ticket. If that is the case, Senator Hawley seems like a pretty good guess. With the caveat that I still think the odds favor a woman, and my current best guess would be Nikki Haley, I would like to evaluate some alternative, white male running mate possibilities.

At first I thought that the person with one of the most substantial &, I guess impressive, at least on paper, credentials, would be Speaker Kevin McCarthy; after all, as third in line to the Presidency already, VP would be only one small step closer. But since that would entail leaving his so long sought after position, this seems unrealistic. While Lindsey Graham has political clout, as well, I don't think Trump could trust that Senator Graham, wouldn't also pull a Pence, on him, if the time came.

I earlier had mentioned Virginia Governor Glen Youngkin, who seems very well spoken, and clearly has populist appeal. But I'd wondered if he might not foresee that campaign voyage, ending up on the sea bottom, and so beg off, booking passage on it. A fourth name that came to mind, though, who had much less to lose, than a governorship, a Senate seat, or a House Speakership, was someone of lower political stature, but someone with obviously good political skills: New York State Representative Lee Zeldin. Though he lost his 2022 bid for the NY Governorship, he made the race much closer than expected, in the majority Blue State. While Andrew Cuomo had won the Governorship with a margin of 23.4%, in 2018, Kathy Hochul (his Lieutenant Governor replacement) won by a margin of only 6.4%. It was the highest % of the vote, for a Republican gubernatorial candidate, since 2002, and the largest raw vote total for one, since 1970. It was also the closest NY state gubernatorial election, since 1994, and the closest Democratic victory, since 1982.

It is going to be a woman more than likely, but his criteria is one of three factors, loyalty, loyalty, and loyalty. That may include MTG, Kristi Noem, or Kari Lake. But this assumes he wins the GOP nomination and who else is running for the GOP nomination.

With Trump conventional wisdom and tradition have gone out the window. You’re looking at this from that point of view. Remember Obama won his senate seat in 2004 and then the presidency in 2008. 4 years as a senator. Vance would have 2, but be VP instead of president. Harris won her senate seat in 2016, 4 years later she’s VP. I don’t see much difference between 2 to 4 years.

I sure with Trump, he’ll choose whoever he thinks is the most loyal to him. Age, experience, gender, maybe even political ideology isn’t important to him. Trump himself doesn’t have a political philosophy of his own. The 7-time party switcher has adopted whatever political ideology of the party he belonged to at the time.

People vote the top of the ticket, who’s VP, few pay that any attention except political junkies and the media. I don’t know of and haven’t heard of anyone who based their vote for the presidency on who was the VP choice. I don’t think anyone voted for Biden in 2020 because he chose Harris. Those who voted for Biden were loyal democrats or independents who wanted to be rid of Trump. Not because Biden choose Harris. Those folks would have voted for Biden over Trump regardless of who Biden chose as VP.

Your long post, was completely off topic. And this follows the same sort of stunt, you'd pulled, by posting a virtual treatise on the abortion pill ruling, in my thread, about a townspeople & their Republican leadership, considering closing their libraries, rather than put back on the shelves, a dozen books that they'd found to be inappropriate. And this, despite the fact that I did have another thread, specifically about the abortion pill ruling. What is your problem?

So what is the huge assumption I am making, which you begin your post by proclaiming, but which you never get around to answering? It seems to me-- and granted, it is a speculative endeavor, trying to figure out the motivations behind utterly irrational actions, such as your postings-- that you threw your Trump diatribe into my thread, because you took this to be a pro-Trump thread. Is that correct? If so, it is you, who'd made the huge assumption, and been incorrect in so doing. I had quite clearly indicated, that this was a speculative thread
, predicated only on current appearances, and noting the possibility that the legal system, in particular, could throw a monkey wrench into the Trump plan. Regardless, I don't believe that Trump would win, in another bid for the White House. And I am a liberal, who supported Bernie Sanders, but who has now become a Biden fan. Even though I had given Trump a chance, after he was elected in 2016, I was never in the Trump "camp."

Now it's your turn-- what gives, with all the derailing, off-topic posts, with which you seem to be targeting my threads? Or do you do that to everyone's threads?

I'd never claimed that "life was fair"-- another one of your inexplicable comments. There are, however rules, that apply in certain situations, and in particular places, such as on the Political Forum. And I have had it, with your rude disregard of those rules. My next step, will not be trying to reason with you, as I am now doing, but to take action.

I am not sure why you use the word "but," because that loyalty criteria was included in the OP. Kristi Noem seems like a good guess, though. MTG would be a joke; and Kari Lake has far less credibility than Rep. Greene.

It would be interesting, however, simply from the perspective of seeing how far the new, spineless GOP would allow Trump to push standards, before they put their foot down. But I guess, technically, if Trump is the nominee, he can pick whoever he wants-- I'll give you that much. It's just that I had given Trump enough credit, to recognize poor casting.
