I once was watching a boxing match on HBO. Two of the commentators, George Foreman and Larry Merchant got into a disagreement concerning the fight. No, we don't learn everything by doing. We go to grammar school to learn basic skills so we can function in the world (reading, math, language, etc). We go to high school to learn some intermediate things like history we can glean some lessons from, how our government works, and more advanced things related to the basics. We go to college to learn much more advanced things, critical thinking, management skills to help us in life and specialized things of our choice.

But everything in school, at all levels, is not the end game unless you decide you want it to be and become a teacher. For most people, school is all about gaining the skills to live a full and productive life. Doctors study medicine not to simply educate themselves, but to treat patients and heal the sick. Lawyers learn their skills to see that laws are applied equally and properly. Engineers (I'm one of those) study so that we can conceive, design, build and test things that human beings use in their daily lives.

Education is preparation. And although it is tremendously valuable, it remains preparation for life. Not the execution of life.
