The Feds have tried to convict him before and failed. Menendez does not wilt under pressure.

'US Senator Robert Menendez and his wife don’t want jurors at their upcoming corruption trial to learn about the power couple’s luxurious lifestyle that included cigars, handbags and jewelry.

Lawyers for Menendez and his wife, Nadine, objected Friday to prosecutors seeking to offer such evidence in New York federal court, where they’re accused of accepting bribes of cash, gold bars and a car in exchange for political favors for three businessmen.

Jurors shouldn’t be told about their “preference for expensive luxury items” including his preference for Bombay Sapphire Gin, cigars and upscales meals on a limited salary, and her handbags and jewelry while desiring a Mercedes-Benz, according to separate filings by the couple’s lawyers.

“There is no yacht or vacation home that was draining Senator Menendez’s finances,” lawyers for the New Jersey Democrat wrote in the filing. “He lived well within his means as a federal government employee.” Menendez’s lawyers ridiculed prosecutors for trying to brand run of the mill purchases as luxury items.

NEW YORK (AP) — The wife of New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez is seeking a delay to her criminal trial next month, saying a newly diagnosed and serious medical condition requires a “surgical procedure” within six weeks.

The request was made by her lawyers in a letter to a Manhattan federal court judge who will preside over a May 6 trial of the Democrat, his wife and two New Jersey businessmen.


In their letter, lawyers for Nadine Menendez said their client is not able to assist them in preparing for trial in the next four weeks because of her “medical circumstances.”

'A federal judge in New York decided Thursday that Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine Menendez will face bribery charges in two separate trials; Nadine Menendez's trial will be delayed while she undergoes surgery to treat a medical condition.

Sen. Menendez's trial will begin May 6, as originally scheduled, and Nadine Menendez's trial is tentatively set to begin July 8.

"This trial is going forward without Mrs. Menendez," said District Judge Sidney Stein, according to the Associated Press. "The government is going to have to try this case two times."

'The bribery trial of US Senator Bob Menendez and two businessmen was pushed back a week to May 13 by a judge who cited negotiations on a statement that averts the need to disqualify a co-defendant’s lawyer.

US District Judge Sidney Stein in New York moved the date at a hearing Friday, where the New Jersey Democrat is accused of accepting bribes of cash, gold bars and a car to help three businessmen and the Egyptian government. Menendez, 70, is also charged with acting as a foreign agent of Egypt.

Menendez is prepared to blame his wife at trial for withholding information from him about gifts they allegedly accepted from businessmen seeking favors, court records show. Stein moved the trial after prosecutors and defense lawyers agreed on a factual statement, known as a stipulation, that allows an attorney for co-defendant Wael Hana to remain on the case. The judge said Wednesday that unless they could reach an agreement, prosecutors may have called the lawyer, Lawrence Lustberg, as a witness, forcing Hana to get a new lawyer.'
