Culturally speaking, if something in the US is a complete mess, we'd call it a train wreck. A car wreck is always understood literally.
Americans have always been pioneers with no desire to emulate anyone/anything else.
America is the world superpower that dominates in every catergory from medicine to media. Perhaps we're more learned than you think.
If you have questions about American culture, shoot...I'll do my best.

Where did you acquire your perception of Americans?

    The humidity.

The humidity in Mass. right now is off the chart.

Tomorrow will be 97 and with close to 100% humidity it will feel like 115.

    :) :)
    The humidity...
I never appreciated Georgia's humidity until I spent 9 months in Colorado. Gawd that arid climate puts a hurtin on a peach.
We've had a pretty mild summer here. 95 in Georgia during August is pretty typical.
Do you get a lot of snow? Snow in Georgia and snow in Colorado...very different.

We get a huge amount of snow.

A few years ago we got over 40 inches of snow on Halloween.

The snow was wet and heavy and the trees still had leaves on them and it took down a lot of branches and trees and we lost power for 11 days.

We get Nor'easters...Blizzards....like a winter hurricane and we get 100 mph winds and 4 feet to 6 feet of snow.

    I've never been to Massachusetts.
I remember flying into Denver a couple of days before Halloween and I left in May. It never rained...not once. They call snow powder there because it is light and dry.
Have you ever heard of Georgia's blizzard of 93?? Haha... Shut us down for 3 days. They even made t-shirts that said, "I survived the blizzard of 93"
11 days, no power?? Do y'all have generators? What about water?

We are a hardy bunch and yes I have a generator and so do most people up here.

If you have an artisan well then you need electricity for it to be pumped up but city water flows with no issue.

I have a gas stove so even though I could not heat my home with the furnace I have a big fireplace and I boiled water on the gas stove.

I remember that storm I think....but the storms we get all the time you would think were the end of the world! LOL!!

Oh lawt honey...mention snow in Georgia and everyone buys bread and toilet paper and schools close before any precipitation...just based on forecast.
Nobody down here has chains, four wheel drive, or generators. Most new homes are total electric.
We don't lose power nearly like we used to because of ice breaking lines...Utilities are run underground now.
It really is comical to see southerners in the snow.... We just don't get much and we aren't equipped to handle it.

Where is Marco Island? Never heard of it. Most of my vacations have been in Florida. Mostly PCB, Orlando, Clearwater, Daytona...
    Can't imagine snow in Florida.

We get it but very rarely.

Marco Island is an island off the West Coast of Florida it's part of Naples.

The island is completely subdivided and has waterways cut through it so you can drive your boat right to your home.

I have not been there lately as I am renting the home out.

I have just been too busy.

The island is right on the coast so you just drive there.
