Why does the DNC run Sanders as a candidate?

I don't understand - if Sanders is an independent and rallies against the so Democratic 'establishment', then why does the DNC run him as a candidate?

Here is my brilliant theory. None of their candidates got any real traction, the impeachment blew up in their face and they know Trump is going to get reelected. So, they want to regroup and try again in 4 years. Bernie will lose big. It is really hard to a party to stay in power more than 8 years so that will be their advantage.

Well, I suppose that they are running Sanders because he has some issues that are part of the Democrat brand.

And, also, he paid the small fee to be on the democratic ballot.

Years ago, on the "Colbert Report" TV show, Steven Colbert showed how politics works to elect a Presidental candidate, and it appeared that it's cheaper to run on the Democratic side.

What I mean is, why did they select him to run.

Given the candidates were debating last Summer, well before the impeachment was even thought of, makes that theory not brilliant.

My guess is that @StarFox was saying why the DNC STUCK BY Sanders during the campaign, but I assume that once a candidate has been accepted, that they can't just be thrown out unless they commit some sort of crime or something.

Bernie running as an independent would take enough votes from the Democrats in the general election that they would have no chance to beat any Republican. They included Bernie with the hopes that they could defeat him in the primaries and not have to face Bernie and Trump in the general election. It's not working out too well for them. They seem to be getting Bernie or Bloomberg. Neither is a true traditional Democrat. Kind of like Trump isn't a true traditional Republican. America is tired of the D/R 2 sided coin.

    Bernie is a registered D.
Even ran 4 yrs ago as a D.

Must've filled whatever requirements he needed to be labeled a D as Senator.

Just like former D tRUMP is now a R.

I've been tired of the D/R 2 sided coin for a couple of decades now.
Neither side has a problem with whittling away at our citizens freedoms and liberties.

Bernie has spent most of his time as an independent and only in the last few years ran as a Democrat. He is seen as an outsider to the left of most of the party.

If they didn't allow Bernie into the democrat party fold, he has the option of running as an independent, and if he did he would get a huge portion of the democrat votes. He is more popular than one might think and has very dedicated supporters.

Well actually, you've just made me think of a more appropriate question - why did the DNC allow Sanders to join the party? After all, this was the first step before running for President as a Democrat.

Exactly. Him being an outsider is why it makes zero sense that they ever accepted him. Again, what do you mean they would not have to face Bernie and Trump in the general election?

Do we know what's in it for Sanders to run as a Democrat as opposed to an independent?

If Bernie were not allowed to run as a Democrat in the primaries he would likely run as an independent. The Democrats wouldn't have a prayer against Trump if Bernie is syphoning Democratic support from the left in the general election.

Do you think that Sanders would have just as much chance of beating Trump if he ran as an independent?

I'm no expert but imo he can get more moderates by running as a democrat, while as an independent he would be more limited to the uber socialists he already has. There's also party support and money to consider which are always more difficult for independents striking out for November on their own.

The DNC put Commie Sanders on the stage to make Hillary look less radical. Without understanding how much of their base bought into it. They thought Biden was the answer this cycle, but he's a dud. The DNC wants Commie Sanders' supporters without Sanders, just one more liberal blunder...

Who do you mean by "moderates?" Moderate democratic voters?

    So what?

Trump used to be a Liberal NY Democrat who supported the Clintons.

Well, they call themselves moderates and I suppose they are a little bit toward the center compared to a radical uber socialist.

They’ve been telling the young people all these extreme things for a generation and now they’re surprised that the youth are supporting Sanders. Kind of funny actually!
