I just voted in the federal election today. It literally could not be easier.

It's a booth in the lobby of a university residence (not THE university residence, my town actually has two right down the street from each other; odd, I admit). There's one man at a table who is obviously an immigrant from Africa judging by his accent. I present my driver's license, he verifies by that I live in this electoral district. I neglected to register to vote beforehand, but not to worry. He pulls up a sheet, writes down my personal info from my driver's license, makes me sign a declaration at the bottom that I'm a Canadian citizen, am 18 or older and live in this electoral district, he hands me a ballot and says with a smile "An X, a checkmark, a smiley face, whatever, just so long as only one candidate is marked ok?" I nod, hold up my pen and say "You're left handed too?" He grins and says "Of course my brother". We share a short laugh. I walk to the back, vote, walk back to the front, he tears a strip off the side to mark the ballot as completed, I drop it in the box and waltz out.

Forgive me, I really fail to see how voter ID laws will cause a 2nd Jim Crow. America has millions of illegal immigrants inside its borders, it is even more imperative for you than for us that you make sure your elections are not affected by people who are not even citizens of your country, and thus have no business in choosing its government. I'm sorry, but if you're not a citizen, you shouldn't be able to vote, and there should be a way of making sure you aren't an interloper. This isn't something new, voter ID is viewed, rightly, as bloody common sense in the rest of the 1st world. The only reason it would be a problem is if your party of choice is trying to garner illegal voters, which, given their numbers, would obviously help your election odds.

Also, while I'm at it, what is your experience at the polls like down there? I've heard over the years of there being occasional problems with voting going smoothly - I don't get how you can (*)(*)(*)(*) something this simple up. And why in the (*)(*)(*)(*) are your electoral districts created by each state? Why is gerrymandering a thing? Why is this allowed when it is so obviously a way to keep incumbents in office?

This is allowed because instead of the American people keeping up with their elected officials, they would rather keep up with the Kardashians.

I like how I can vote by mail with an early ballot form. Makes it convenient and easy.

Yes, it IS easy in some states. The Republicans discovered just how easy this was in 2000. They also discovered how easy it was for them to re-program Diebold voting machines. As you recall, in many selected polling places, exit polls had Gore well ahead of Bush, but the altered voting machines substituted Bush's name for Gore's in the official count.

With this as their excuse, and no other evidence of voter fraud, some Red States have established Jim Crow laws aimed at minority and poor voters, making it very difficult and/or expensive to obtain an official ID required by these new state laws. This is being done under the guise of preventing voter fraud.

Much of what I stated occurred fifteen years ago, so was conveniently forgotten long ago by the right wing.

I live in NYC, one of the most Liberal cities in the USA.

in order to vote, I give my name.

they look up my name, and then I sign my signature...next to all my previous signatures from previous years.

that means i only get to vote once. if i try to vote again, they will see I already voted.

now, i could give someone else's name and vote in their place, I guess.

I also live in NY and I could have voted 3 times last election no problem. They ask my name and thats it. No signature check.

I grew up in Hudson County NJ. I voted in the last 35 elections. So did my grandfather and father, both being dead for the past 22 and 30 years respectively.

Only in some states. In DE you must vote in person unless you are not going to be present in the state on election day, due to illness, or being out of state or the nation. You have to apply for an absentee ballot. Here is the DE law for military or people overseas. http://electionsncc.delaware.gov/absentee_de/de_uocava.shtml. All others must give a reason that fits one of the following catagories.

    • Work: The nature of your work prevents you from going to your polling place (this includes students).
    • Public Service: Your service to the United States or to the State of Delaware prevents you from going to your polling place. Spouses or dependents of the person in service also qualify. (Public service includes military, American Red Cross, etc.)
    • International: You are temporarily residing outside of the United States.
    • Religion: The tenets or teaching of your religion prevent you from going to your polling place.
    • Vacation: You are on vacation on Election Day.
    • Illness: You are sick.
    • Disability: You are permanently or temporarily disabled.
    • Incarceration: You cannot make it to the polls because you are incarcerated.

My state has one. The reality is that it is more likely to affect old people who no longer drive than welfare people so the GOP is probably damaging their own turn out.

We don't have voter ID laws because there's cabal (Democrat entity) that is trying to steal the next election by any means possible. To this end they are importing illegal aliens by the thousands daily with the wet dream of blanket citizenship for millions by November 2016. As a back up plan if this fails they are fighting tooth and nail to prevent any sort of identification requirement anywhere in the US.I think that if they prevail in banning IDS every REAL American voter should vote dozens of times to offset this BS.
