As for the notion of totalitarianism, as in a lack thereof in american society, surely you jest. You are THE most heavily state surveilled population the planet has ever known. You now have no guarantee of Habeas corpus; your society has repealed the fuggin’ Magna Charta, you’re back to the 1100s with your legal protections from the power of the state. Your president can order targeted assassinations of citizens and your society embraces torture and police murders of unarmed citizens in the streets. You have accepted garish displays of state military power funded at public expense at sporting events. You have returned to profiteering from bondage with corporate for profit prisons, a growth industry.

You exist in a totalitarian authoritarian power structure, you simply cannot face it so you retreat into illusion and fantasy.
