Why is the US Capitol Building so HOPELESSLY vulnerable?

I have to say, I am ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDED by how those pieces of dirty human waste were able to EFFORTLESSLY breach the US Capitol Building. Shouldn't the Capitol area be the single most protected place in the country? Why the hell does it take SWAT and other police from effing VIRGINIA to deal with this sort of thing? In my mind, there should be the single best SWAT team in the entire country stationed 24/7 right in the centre of the place!

I think that America is a truly great country, but there are times such as this that I think that it is a complete and utter JOKE!

Any idea on why it is so vulnerable to attack?

Why didn't they just let the protesters in like Democrats in Wisconsin, allowing the protesters against the Republican governor to take over the entire Capital try to block passing legislation?

For protesters at capitals, this is the Democratic Party's position that should be on signage:

"Democratic Protesters are welcome but Republican Protesters will be shot to death."

That's how it works in the USA now, isn't it? Just like Republican protesters will be arrested, but Democratic protesters will be cheered.

It's a great question. I don't know why they weren't as prepared for this gang as they were for BLM protesters. And I also don't know why Pence had to be the one to call in the national guard. We know Trump was watching on TV - was his mouth too full of popcorn to make the call?

Is it not more likely that Trump simply didn't want to call them in?

If the protesters were let in like done for the Democrats - shutting down the capital and blocking all legislation and voting, there would be no violence. Why weren't the protesters at the Capital allowed in?

It is a complex of interconnected public buildings with 1,000's of people entering and leaving them every day just for work, let alone the 3-5 million visitors every year. The capitol building itself is an art/history museum.

I heard one commentator that had worked the in some sort of security capacity describe it as "a house of the people and not meant to be a fortress."
Try something like this at the Pentagon and see what happens!

    1) For starters, division of responsibility. There are portions of the area that are under the authority of the D.C police force but actual security for the capitol is responsibility of the Capitol Park Police. IIRC there are at least two other law enforcement agencies with at least some level of responsibility and authority there as well. Those things lead to conflict and conflict leads to paralysis.

    2) Secondly, there is a strong bias in favor of allowing public political protests to the greatest degree possible for obvious reasons. You don't want city, state or federal law enforcement in the position of being out there beating civil rights activists do you? If you take that position you pretty much have to apply it to those of all political stripes.

Incompetence on the part of security and planning. With such an important event going on, there should have been re-enforced presence and further re-enforcements quickly available. People should be fired for this.

How does that mean that Virginia has to provide law enforcement?

Forget about the fact that there was an important event going on - what about the potential for a terrorist attack by foreigners who want to target the heart of US politics? Shouldn't the place be CONSTANTLY well protected?

I hate to say it, but the police initially made the right step to not have a large presence.

When people protest there are lots of reactions the state can give. The two big ones are "We understand you're protesting and we're listening." and "We understand your protesting but we're not listening". This can be tempered by the way the police act. If the police are in riot gear (like this past summer) it can breed conflict because the protestors interpret riot control as "they're not listening", so violence becomes justified in the eyes of the crowd. The capital police were trying really hard to prevent that from happening by keeping a light presence. Which was dumb because the president (who can control the crowd) had egged them on. There was no way it wasn't going to turn violent, especially with Georgia's results being announced. They should have seen this coming.
