I just got a curious question.

Why is the Vice President of the United States elected? Why can't the Presidential Nominee just select his vice president and have him approved by the United States Senate? The President still wouldn't be able to fire him, but it will ensure that the presidential nominee didn't waist his time choosing him should the Vice President fail to be elected by the electors.

I just turnd 18 this year and I still have yet to register to vote for the President and Vice President. I just want to know if their is any reason the Vice President has to be elected.

In reality the president or candidate does choose his vice .... never considered them elected in anyway. What exactly are you referencing ?

They used to get elected completely separetly- that was a big failure.

Short answer: because that is what the Constitution says.

The way we elect Presidents and Vice Presidents has changed over the years with the two-party system. I think we started out with the candidate who won 2nd place in the general elections was the Vice President, or something like that. A lot of shady deals made in smokey rooms behind the scenes that don't get recorded in the history books, I can imagine.

Personally, I am glad that the most immediate people in the line of succession are elected.

For all practical purposes, the Vice President is selected. If the VP resigns or dies or is incapacitated, the President appoints a new VP, who is approved by the Senate.
