Why should politicians fix anything when it doesn't benefit them?

Heard on the radio this morning an epiphany, on NPR no less=) WHile discussing immigration the guest mentioned that Democrats do not want to fix immigration or else they wouldn't have it as a platform next election cycle and a tool to demonize the other side. It all became so abundantly clear with nearly every major issue Democrats run on. Think about it.

If they fix supposed systemic racism, they can't use that to get votes. Can't use that bone anymore.

If they fix immigration, they can't use that to get those single issue voters either.

It goes on and on. Republicans want to fix immigration and are trying(some of them) to solve the issue, while others refuse to do anything. If they fix it, what will some of them have to run on? Politicians job's are really hard when they have simply rely on themselves and just not **** anything up. If they have no BIG issues to use as tools to sway voters, then what use are they?
