Not really. It could be they needed help until their body had recovered sufficiently, perhaps after a serious accident or heart attack, or major surgery.

It means treatment to cure the problem isn't working. People live with incurable cancer for years, for example. It just means although the problem cant be cured, it can be kept under control.

The procedures carried out that are necessary to support life are painful. Patients on life support are given pain relieving drugs to help.
Sometimes it's not possible to know if the patient can actually experience the pain, though.
In the case of Alfie Evans , when doctors tested him for responses to pain, his seizures increased.
That in itself didn't mean he could experience pain, but it could have done. It couldn't be ruled out.

 

Is it common that they recover sufficiently?

Yeah, I was thinking of "treatment" as treatment for a cure - Slightly narrow minded of me I will admit.

So "pain" and "experience of pain" are two entirely different things?
