Women march in Rio to protest 'green economy'

Thousands of women representing social and farm movements marched in central Rio Monday to rail against the "green economy" advocated by the Rio+20 conference on sustainable development.
Behind a large banner from the international peasant movement Via Campesina proclaiming "the peoples are against the mercantilization of nature", they marched several miles to the Flamengo park, the venue for the "People's Summit" organized by civil society groups on the sidelines of the Rio+20 event.
Several hundred men closed off the march to show their solidarity.

Perched atop a truck fitted with loudspeakers, a female activist howled: "This is a march of urban and rural women against this Rio+20 charade."
"No to green capitalism! Yes to an economy based on solidarity, yes to people's sovereignty," she added.

People's Summit militants view the "green economy" concept touted by organizers of the official Rio+20 gathering as just "another stage of capitalist accumulation" after the failure of the current model.
World leaders are to gather here from Wednesday to Friday to debate how to steer the planet toward a greener and more sustainable future.
"We are out on the streets to give visibility to our world struggle for an end to violence against women, for peace and demilitarization, access to common goods and economic empowerment for women," said 36-year-old Celia Alldridge, a member of the march secretariat who described herself as "half English, half Swiss".

The marchers comprised women of all walks of life, students, rural and indigenous people, some carrying placards reading "women are not meant to be slapped on the face or the buttocks."
Luise Sanuto, an ethnic Tabajara from northeast Brazil, said she faced even greater discrimination as an indigenous person."

"Indigenous peoples are discriminated against and have been shown disrespect since the arrival of the (Portuguese) colonizers" in 1500.

I'll have to do a pro & con table on this one.

I do find it odd that the developed world wants to tell the third world how to use their resources. Seems a bit unfair.

I donot understand why the green campaigners are only females?? is this issues only affect females or it is for the prosperity of all sectors n our society?? They are mixing different unrelated issues with one another. Whole people need to support each other and take action to a cleaner environment. That is what really matters.

The trouble with the Green movement is that it cost so much and China. Obama has given billions to get green plants going with things like solar and wind power. Only to see China come along and under cut everyone and then these multi billion dollar investments go right down the drain, along with the jobs they had. Same with the electric cars. You have the government giving over seven thousand dollar subsidies in order for people to be able to afford them and still sales are slow. Now they are talking of upping it to ten thousand dollars. This is billions of our tax dollars being wasted. If we are to go Green, we need to get the price down or do something with China and good luck with that. We need them to buy our bonds so we can pay our bills.

    Unfortunately I couldn't agree more.

While I want to support green energy to the fullest, I have to sit back and realize we are not quite ready yet. It costs too much and puts our citizens at a disadvantage, which hurts a lot of people in the end. One day ....

For a good story and example.

A company Vystar opened in the US and started making a FANTASTIC product. I'm talking pinto vs Ferrari type difference.

It was however ~40% more expensive in an industry where cost is king.

When we first saw them open up, I called and took a tour stating my interest to purchase domestically if possible. What I saw was the holy grail of glove mfg.

Beautiful, however, it made me realize the difference from my own factory in Malaysia. Then I realized what I was paying for and a lot of it I was told by the owner, is required by law to be so upgraded.

I told him that one day I hoped to buy from him as it really is what AmErica needs. However, putting myself and my Employees out of work to do so is just flat out bad business.

And now the full circle. One day I hope to have clean energy and it really is what America needs. But right now it's just bad business.
