Because if the pool owner can't afford the 12 grand to install the thing he has to close the pool to EVERYONE or risk being sued. And that sucks for us all.

That is life, people who are disabled also want to swim. Now what type of society would it be, if they were denied access to pools.

The same type of society we are that deny them mountain climbing, horse back riding, and a multitude of other activities.

I guess we'll be required to install wheelchair access devices for treadmills next.

I really can't believe the amount of stupidity in this thread.

    A) You don't need a 12K lift to get a wheel chair bound individual into a pool. I work in a hotel and we have a mechanical based, hydraulic pool life that just sits in a hole by the pool, the little seat is slid under the persons ass, and you pump it up to lift them. then swing over pool, and slowly lower. Jesus Christ this isn't rocket science.

    EDIT**
here is a picture of it.

    B) you don't have to use your legs to swim. your arms and natural buoyancy will keep you afloat no problem.

This is completely ridiculous! Just one more example of the excessive burdens being placed on businesses.
People who cannot even walk down a few steps, with the help of a rail, have no business going out to a hotel and swimming!
The left wants everyone to be dragged down by the less capable and incompetent.

You could of course have been wounded in wars, or like me an accident at work when I fell from a great height.

It's sad that today people still think people with disabilities are either work shy or scroungers or Lamo's .

But I suppose people like this can be said to be suffering them selves from some sort of mental disablity.

Your right that people with disabilities should be allowed to have a life.

Because these folks are also part of your country and it's a sign of society's wealth and achievement when every citizen has access to services.
Of course it's always Obama's fault! lol
Why don't the strongest strive and built their own private pool instead of whining?

    Absolutely right .
You excellently identified that type of person who is selfish to the point of disgust . Not concerned or sympathetic to the disadvantages suffered by so many and not even their fault .
The Nazi SS decided to eliminate all such people . I feel sure you can find such groups if you try hard enough .

An indication of a civilised prosperous society is how it cares for its less fortunate, the infirmed and needy.

America is not a civilised proserous society.

I can't swim either and I'm able-bodied, but I still like to fool around in pools. You never hear of hydro-therapy either?

Exactly-it's a 'me first and screw everyone else' society which, apparently, is what 'personal responsiblity' is...

All they need is a ramp for the wheelchairs. A lift is not always necessary, and most hotels have lifts anyway. People don't walk up stairs, they go in the elevator.

You have obviously never seen a wheelchair bound person swimming. You can swim even if your legs don't work. Even seen the paralympics?

Well, the problem isn't the lift -- if the hotel wants a lift, fine. The thing is that this is being forced, honestly I think had this been wanted even by the disabled, the hotels would have already put out the lifts. They don't want to lose business. But spending $10,000 dollars on equipment that probably isn't going to be used (and not including the inspections and a mechanic to fix the lifts) is not worth the cost. I think the most likely thing that will happen is the end of pools at hotels (they cost too much) rather than inclusion of disabled swimmers.

I agree, for many small hotels this will be so.
It's a good question how useful this legislation is, regardless of the somewhat dismissive and incendiary OP.

The federal government is just reading the tea leaves. There are going to be more and more seniors (high profile voters) with more and more health problems. After the seniors, there are going to be more and more grossly obese people (some of whom will vote) and more disabled people (saved by the miracles of modern science). Unless we make a massive change in both our lifestyles, our legal immigration levels and our values and levels of voter participation, this is a good move by the federal government.

What's any of this got to do with legal immigration - do you think the world's senior and obese will immigrate for the hotel swimming pools? lol
