Americans live in a constant state of fear.

Every day during the week there are lockdowns at schools because someone saw a gun. Sometimes the gun ends up being a black cellphone or nothing at all. Or bomb threats where no bombs are found. Oh, my favourite, the suspicious packages commonly found at airports which end up being nothing. Mind you this happens in Canada a few times a year but not Every. Single. Week. And now today there was panic in a mall because people mistook a falling display case as gun shots which shouldn't be possible because gun shots have a distinct sound and it is not that. So while you guys fight over Duck Dynasty and A&E, you have more concerns to solve. Your absolute paranoia when it comes to potential public mass killings. Despite mass killings being up in %, you are still most likely to be killed by someone that you know.

Maybe next year will be better? Not likely. Sooner or later you are going to have to face this thing. You're wasting money and resources on a boogeyman that you will never catch. Your subconscious.

I don't live in constant fear or any chronic fear. As often as not I get up in the morning to discover that I forgot to lock my front door. My door is always unlocked when I am at home and awake. I see people with guns often as I live in an open carry state. I don't carry. I think it is unnecessary and redneckish. Mind you I live in a city with a higher than average poor population, and violent crime rate. I live in a decent neighborhood where not much happens and the police are seldom seen. Perhaps I will be murdered in my sleep some day, but until then, don't worry be happy.

Just remember that the corporate media, the talk radio shows, and the bloggers who feed on promoting outrage over Duck Dynasty devote a lot of time to fear mongering and preying on the fear and insularity of their audiences.

Things are somewhat 'neurotic' here; that's for sure.

A few weeks ago I was in Germany. I distinctly remember being relatively more relaxed in public there, than I ever am here. :(

The only people who live in abject fear of anything are those who are unable to put danger in perspective.

The odds of one dying in a mass shooting or terrorist attack are astronomical in proportion to those dangers that they really face.

The media, in their zeal to "sell" news look for the bleed stories. That skews perspective, and morons that cannot separate that from reality, stunt their lives adjusting to shadows.

Worse... They beg politicians to "make" all of us "safer", which they attempt, most often poorly and at the expense of liberty.

Ya, not really. But it's always nice to see some canadian talking out of his ass and using one generalization for over three hundred million people. Good job buddy.

The U.S. has a violent rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, Canada 935, Australia 92 and South Africa 1,609.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ry-Europe-Britain-worse-South-Africa-U-S.html

Now compare Canada's violent crime rate to the U.S. and you'll see you have more concerns of your own to solve than we do. Merry Christmas!

    Not this again.

Countries measure crime differently. Some are stricter than others.

In Canada and others like UK on that list count ordinary assault as violent assault.

    We've been through this before.

It is dumb to compare crime stats of other countries because of this.

Yes we have and every time it's a parade of cheap excuses.

Canada has violent crime rate is 935 per 100,000 people and the U.S. it's 466 per 100,000 people. So I can understand how that would be an inconvenient truth for any Canadian attempting to impune the U.S.

This little discussion is amusing. The OP would have us looking like the birds that I like to keep company with. This goes on to an old Daffy Duck cartoon I really like. He goes floating around, doing regular duck things, and stuff keeps trying to "get him". The moral of that cartoon is that he keeps letting his guard down, so every minor threat is a very big deal.
Maybe it was that cartoon that helped to teach me to just be aware of my surroundings, ALL the time.
I drive an average of about 120 miles a day at work, in Las Vegas. People often remark that they would go nuts in the traffic. I tell them that it's not like that at all. You just have to understand that the world is saturated in STUPID. Just watch out for people who are about to do something stupid. You'll stay out of crashes, shootings, bars, and the hospital.
This is a very large part of why people who carry, openly or concealed, tend to be involved in very few altercations. They practice situational awareness and threat assessment all the time.

I tend to agree, those school children where murdered in America, not the UK, and we have a 200 year history of this BS.

I read stories every week in a newsletter of gun related incidents in your country and people forget their guns in public probably half as much as they do cellphones which is a lot.

You could have included the part in my post where I said that the world is saturated in STUPID, and prevented the need for me to write this reply.

They might get into very few altercations because not everyone is a Zimmerman, but that doesn't mean they are cautious.

    Read the article next time

But criminologists say crime figures can be affected by many factors, including different criminal justice systems and differences in how crime is reported and measured.

In Britain, an affray is considered a violent crime, while in other countries it will only be logged if a person is physically injured.

The rate of mass killings is increasing drastically, but according to FBI statistics our overall murder rate has been steadily decreasing since 1992.

Please don't get us going that way! If you recall the testimony, Z didn't even remember that he had a gun with him until after Thugvon started pummeling his head on the sidewalk. Otherwise, Z was doing what a neighborhood watch is supposed to do.
There may well be a problem with people who carry before they are gun savvy enough. Even I have left a rifle on the luggage rack of my car once (only once) and started driving off. It was situated in such a way that it wouldn't fall off, but that's not where it was supposed to be.

Correct. Our murder rate peaked in 1980 with something like 10.6/100,000. As of 2010 It declined to 4.3/100,000. But according to the foreigner, we are all living in constant fear.
