I don't own any houses. Due to my job I am forced to relocate every few years and I like the ease of simply packing up my things and leaving without worrying about trying to sell a house or rent one out when I leave. I've thought about buying a home and renting it out but I've seen way too many horror stories of friends of mine being unable to rent their homes for awhile and being stuck paying a mortgage and rent wherever they happen to be living now. Most of the places I live aren't exactly prime renting locations either. The house that I live in now sat vacant for years before I moved in. The home owner was so eager for me to rent the place that I was able to basically low ball the hell out of his asking rental price and he accepted it immediately. After talking to the neighbors I realized nobody has lived here in years and he had been trying to get renters in here the entire time. When I showed interest he was just happy that he would get ANY rental income so he took my offer even though it was much lower than the listed rental price. And when I move from here I can simply pack up my stuff and leave without hassle. I like that freedom. Even though I could save money every month by having a mortgage vs rent I still don't believe it's worth it to own a home. I'd much rather pay an extra few hundred bucks a month to be able to just get up and leave rather than deal with the hassle of trying to sell or rent a house when I leave. I don't really like rental places and paying someone elses mortgage for them but due to my job it's really the best option for me in my opinion. The only way I'd buy a home would be if I happen to move to a place that I actually want to live in when I retire. I have no desire to live in ANY of the places I've been so far. After doing the math and talking to a real estate agent I realized that the amount of money I'd actually make from owning a home vs the amount of work required to own a home just simply wasn't worth it to me. Plus due to the nature of my job it would be extremely difficult for me to manage a rental property unless it was close to wherever I happen to be at the time. I work a lot and am gone a lot and would have little time to check up on a house or fix anything required in the place unless it was in the same town. I'd basically just to have to rely on a rental agency to handle virtually everything and hope that I actually made some sort of income at the end of each month. Too much risk in my book. I have considered simply buying a home where I plan to retire and try to rent it out throughout my working years to pay the mortgage off until the day comes when I personally want to move in. But I am still up in the air about where exactly I want to settle down for the rest of my life. I realize that where I want to live now may not be the same place I want to live in a few decades. So until I can establish in my mind a place I'd like to call home I think I'll hold off on home ownership for the time being.
Not really. They are nothing to brag about. I am paying for my own home. I only landlord out one of them which is to a business in a resort town that pays enough in rent to cover the annual carrying costs of the others that just sit there. I have no desire to be a landlord and deal with all that hassle.
