Video shows Mohammad Ali's extreme racism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji3KVWbiLlY

Question: do you condemn Mohammad Ali for his racist views?

Me, as a Modern Secular Humanist, I am against racism, as we love everybody, so of course I condemn Mohammad Ali for his racist views. What about you?

I wouldn't 'condemn' Ali; his views were surely a product of the "America" he grew up in. Today, I would say that anyone separating themselves or others based upon color/ethnicity has things wrong. Their thinking would HAVE to be based upon a rather narrow (racist) indoctrination, fear, religious view or plain ignorance. And that isn't to say there aren't plenty of people like that, walking around in America today. Even so, more people than in Ali's day, realize racist thinking is not right.

I don't condemn people for their racism. I will condemn them for pretending they are not being racist when they are, but that is about it.

Not if they don't make racist statements they don't. It's there own fault for being racists. Can you condemn Ali's racism, or are you apparently going to (it seems) defend racism? Ali was a racist, period.

You are like Jesus then (some would see that as a compliment - but it's not.)
Jesus and pals did NOT love everybody, as they hated non-believers so much that they were fine with them burning and burning and burning (no matter how moral a non-believer might have been), as the following verses clearly demonstrate:
    John 14:6, Acts 4:12, 2 Thessalonians 1:1-10, John 3:18, John 10:27-28, Matthew 10:32, Luke 12:8, John 5:2, John 3:36, John 6:47, Acts 16:31, Romans 10:9, Revelation 19:20, 20:10,14-15, 21:8

Modern Secular Humanists love people too much, and are too fair-minded, to ever approve of any belief system that sends non-believers to brutal, savage, barbaric torture, just for being, say, a Hindu like Gandhi was.

Then you are in good company, as the Bible approved of racism in many many verses (Jesus and pals were racists):

30 Biblical Reasons for Separatism [i.e. racial segregation]

    1. God wills all races to be as He made them. Any violation of God's original purpose manifests insubordina-tion to Him. (Acts 17:26, Rom. 9:19-24)

    2. God made everything to reproduce "after his own kind" (Gen 1:11-12, 6:20, 7:14). Kind means type and color. He would have kept them all alike to begin with had he intended equality.

    3. God originally determined the bounds of the habitations of nations, so they would be saved. (17:26, Gen.10:5,32, 11:8, Dt. 32:8 )

    4. Miscongenation (sp?) means the mixture of the races, especially the black and white races, or those of outstanding type, or color. The Bible even goes farther than this. It is against different branches of the same stock intermarrying such as Jews marrying other descendants of Abraham ( Ezra 9-10, Neh. 9-13, Jer 50:37, Ezek 30:5)

    5. Abraham forbade Eliezer (sp?) to take a wife for Isaac of Canaanites ( Gen. 24:1-4). God was so pleased with this that He directed whom to get ( Gen. 24:7, 12-67)

    6. Isaac forbade Jacob to take a wife of the Canaanites ( Gen. 27:46-28:7)

    7. Abraham sent all his sons of the concubines, and even of his second wife, far away from Isaac so their descendants would not mix (Gen. 25:1-6)

    8. Esau disobeying this law brought the final break between him and his father after lifelong companionship with him ( Gen 25:28, 26:34-35, 27:46, 28:8-9)

    9. The two branches of Isaac remained segregated forever ( Gen 36, 46:8-26)

    10. Ishmael and Isaac's descendants remained separated forever ( Gen 25:12-23, 1 Chr 1:29)

    11. Jacobs sons destroyed a whole city to maintain separated (Gen 34)

    12. God forbad intermarriage between Israel and all other nations ( Ex 34:12-16, Dt 7:3-6)

    13. Joshua forbad the same thing on sentence of death ( Josh 23:12-13)

    14. God cursed angels for leaving their own "first estate" and "their own habitation" to marry the daughters of men (Gen 6:1-4, 2 Pet 2:4, Jude 6,7)

    15. Miscogenation (sp?) caused Israel to be cursed ( Judges 3:6-7, Num 25:1-8 ). Note that Phinehas' act was righteous ( Ps 106:30)

    16. This was Solomon's sin ( 1 King 11)

    17. This was the sin of Judahites returning from Babylon ( Ezra 9:1-10:2, 10-18, 44, Neh. 13:1-30)

    18. God commanded Israel to be separated ( Lev 20:24, Num 23:9, 1 King 8:53)

    19. Israelites recognized as a separate people in all ages because of God's choice and command ( Matt 10:6, John 1:11). Equal rights in the gospel gives no right to break this eternal law

    20. Separation between Israelites and all other nations to remain in all eternity ( Is 2:2-4,Ezek 37, 47:13-48, Zech 14:16-21, Matt 19:28, Lk 1:32-33, Rev 7:1-8, 14:1-5)

    21. All nations will remain separated from one another in their own parts of the earth forever ( Acts 17:26, Gen 10:5, 32, 11:8-9, Dt 32:8, Dan 7:13-14, Rev 11:15, 21:24)

    22. Certain people in Israel were not even to worship with others ( Dt 23:1-3, Ezra 10:8, Neh 9:2, 10:28, 13:3)

    23. Even in heaven certain groups will not be allowed to worship together ( Rev 7:7-17, 14:1-5, 15:2-5)

    24. Separation in the O.T. was so strong that an ox and an ass could not be worked together ( Dt 22:10)

    25. Miscogenation (sp?) caused disunity among God's people ( Num 12)

    26. Stock was forbidden to be bred with other kinds ( Lev 19:19)

    27. Sowing mixed seed in the same field was unlawful ( Lev 19:19)

    28. Different seeds were forbidden to be planted in the same vineyards ( Dt 22:9)

    29. Wearing garments of mixed fabrics forbidden ( Dt 22:11, Lev 19:19)

    30. Christians and certain other people of a like race are to be separated based upon behavior ( Mt 18:15-17, 1 Cor 5:9-13, 6:15, 2 Cor 6:14-18, Eph 5:11, 2 Thess 3:6-16, 1 Tim 6:5, 2 Tim 3:5)

    "just not based on melanin."
I admire that part of your reply very much - we both agree that racism is wrong.
You are better in that important metric than even the Buddha:

Buddhism’s “The 32 Signs of a Great Man”:
#14. Golden-hued body. (So obviously a certain race – the Buddha’s, is seen as superior. So I guess you white people, and black people are not great.....blatant racism!)

#29. Eyes deep blue. (So obviously Buddha is superior to Africans, Asians, Indians, etc., in fact MOST peoples, just due to his eye color...blatant racism.)

I admire you, Margot, more than Buddha, in that important area (you are not racist, but obviously Buddha was.)
    Have a great night.

Mohammad didn't love everybody either, so you are in good company.

The Quran plainly tells Muslims that they are a favored race, while those of other religions are “perverted transgressors”:
Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book [Christians and Jews] had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors. (3:110)
As we shall see later, Allah condemns non-Muslims to Hell based merely on their unbelief, while believers are rewarded with the finest earthly comforts in the hereafter, including never-ending food, wine and sex (56:12-40).

Much of the Quran is devoted to distinguishing Muslims from non-Muslims and impugning the latter. Among other things, non-Muslims are said to be diseased (2:10), perverse (2:99), stupid (2:171) and deceitful (3:73).

The first sura of the Quran is a short prayer that is repeated by devout Muslims each day and ends with these words:
Keep us on the right path. The path of those upon whom Thou hast bestowed favors. Not (the path) of those upon whom Thy wrath is brought down, nor of those who go astray. (1:6-7)

And in suggesting that... you provide a false characterization of the man. He may have said things which are racist in our view today... but if we examine his life and the proper context of what he said in the past, virtually anyone could challenge your claim's accuracy and/or comprehensiveness. That is, your claim specious in that you leave out so much overall.

I'm not the racist. Mohammad Ali is. I detest Stormfront/racism.

A Klan member would get skewered, but Ali and Budda get a passes on their racism. That's wrong, of course.

You can't condemn Ali for his racism, can you?

Muslims say the same thing about their prophet: he did so many (allegedly) good things that we are going to ignore the approval of slavery, the instruction to kill gays, his approval of killing of his critics, his wife-beating, his hatred for the Jew, his approval of FGM, his approval of good/moral non-believers burning and burning in hell simply because they didn't believe his wild claim of being the final prophet.

Condemning people for their racism isn't caring about them. It is about looking for a chance to be holier than thou about it. If someone calls a black person a (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*), I am pretty certain it goes without saying that they are aware of their own racism.

How can we create a non-racist society if racists get a pass? Come on, you can do it.

    - - - Updated - - -

It's caring about the people they are being racist against. You don't appear to care about those people, as you are defending racists like Ali. The KKK has an equally hard time condemning racists as you appear to have.

You sound like the Nazis who say we should look at the "big picture" regarding their leader (Hitler), and not get caught up in the little things like his hatred of Jews.
    Mohammad Ali:
    1. Great fighter.
    2. Racist.
    3. Reread #1.

You appear to want the mythical version of Ali, and not the real truth.

Reading the replies I'm stunned here....it's like pulling teeth trying to get people to condemn racists. Incredible! If I didn't know better I'd think we were in the 1800's here!

In a sane world the replies would be "Yes, Freedomseeker, Ali was a blatant racist, so I condemn him for that." But that's anything BUT what the replies are so far.

    Incredible.

I hope more people learn to scrutinize the Bible (or any religious text for that matter) and not take all of it so 'literally'.

That has been a problem for mankind, for a very long time.

I haven't defended Ali. I am indifferent to Ali. He is some old dead guy who has been a has been since as long as I can remember. I don't know what he said thought or did, nor do I care. I don't care about whom he offended since most of them are either old dead people or about to be old dead people too. It is not my duty to fight other people's battles for their hurt feelings.

*I'M* the bad person for pointing out blatant racism in a person who many consider one of the greatest people to have lived in our lifetime....incredible.

I'm talking to you and the other interlocutors about Ali, not every Muslim concerning Allah.

Having said that, I respect that others hold certain religious beliefs (as I do some)... but I do not honor those above the social, physical/scientific realities I know exist. I am often skeptical, critical and will scrutinize religious claims (quietly and respectfully, if at all possible).
