So you're upset Ali didn't like white people at all back in his day in a society that treated blacks like (*)(*)(*)(*)?

Wow, that must really suck, to have your skin color be a reason for someone to hate you and call you an enemy.

I prefer to show respect for the recently departed and reserve my condemnation for those whose shortcomings may still be corrected. Like yourself.

We can correct our own shortcomings by condemning racists and saying that we are not racists ourselves.

    - - - Updated - - -

You seem to believe that "two wrongs make a right", apparently.

One problem is is that the world is holding this person in the very very highest esteem....yet he was a racist. Racists don't deserve to be held in the very very highest esteem. Let's take a stand against racism by condemning Ali's racism. Can you condemn his racism?

Ali helped the US make some significant progress in an era where the US was fine with major injustice and lack of equality for African Americans.

He was a great American, a significant voice, and someone who fully deserves being held in high esteem.

He made progress via being a racial supremacist? I don't think so!

    - - - Updated - - -

You can't condemn racists, can you? I would assume more from someone as smart as you, but I could be wrong.

Come on - look at Ali's racist statements in the video, not the commentary by the videographer. You're trying to deflect away racism....probably just because you like Ali as an athlete....that's wrong.

After 17,000 posts I've NEVER EVER seen a racist being EXCUSED so strongly by what I consider very intelligent forum members. Incredible! Now I see how Hitler's racism was so easily excused by even intelligent Germans. Kind of scary. I thought we were capable of condemning racists......boy was I ever wrong! The people who won't condemn this racist are....racists themselves, arguably.

Yea, same as on other sites. I have refrained from posting since the guy just passed. But it doesn't mean he wasn't a racist. No how much spin is applied.

He was a voice of his people when his people desperately needed voices.

The notion that equality will come without confrontation is just plain ludicrous. Look where we are today. No progress is made when problems that exist are simply lived with.

We make progress ONLY when the problems we face are promoted to the point where solutions are required.

Actually I think that boxing is a terrible sport and Ali was an arrogant blow hard, but I can't trust the statements because there is no context. It is very easy to cherry pick things people say to make them sound any way you want. Not that is really matters if Ali is racist or not, he's dead now.

I'm more of the sympathetic to the guy because of the state of the world he was living in, kind of thing. It's not hard to hate on white people from that era when simply marching for justice and equality got rewarded with police, fire hoses, attack dogs, beatings, jail time, etc.

Umm....okay? I didn't mention Repubs or Reagan at any point.

Just to be clear....you're comparing a mass-murdering psychopathic dictator who had government control of his country, took over and ruined half of the European continent, was a prime instigator in the deadliest conflict in history and had 11 million+ civilians murdered in camps because they didn't have the same genes as him.....to a boxer of a minority class who simply didn't like white people because they did him and his whole race in America wrong?

He didn't face the problem with non-racism, he faced it with MORE RACISM! Didn't you see Ali's statements in the video!?

So what do you want done? Resurrect the man so you can berate him live .

The man has passed. Could I offer that the attention he brought to certain issues, his philanthropy, his assistance to free 15 hostages, etc far outweigh any hostile feelings he may have felt against a hostile group of people during a hostile time?

Ali said he didn't want his family to marry outside his own (clearly seen as superior) race, so he was simply a racist....against all races. Can you condemn him for that.

    - - - Updated - - -

Just condemn him for being racist.

I'm pointing out how people EXCUSE racism....if the racist is, say, well-liked in other areas. We need to stop doing that. For example, if a Republican like Ryan feels Trump is being racist, then he calls Trump out - which is exactly what Ryan just did. Awesome. Call Ali out for his racism, or we don't care about racism as much as we pretend to.

    - - - Updated - - -

I guess then we should not care that Hitler was racist, either, because like Ali, "he's dead now." Ok, got it.

Yeah, the musings of a 20 something black man during the civil rights movement. Got anything more recent to imply here was a racist when he died?

I don't think it was out of superiority, more like he didn't like white people because he was following the Nation of Islam (who he split from later) and was against integration because white people were the enemies. From his mindset that sounds like "why live with people who have done nothing but oppress your people since you got here and have no problems calling you the N-word?"

Right after you condemn the reasons why he was in the first place (condemn the oppressive force that attacks the black group).
