You responded to me talking about his plan. If you weren't talking about his plan, why did you respond to my critique of it?
Well you were trying to connect "conservatives" to Bourne's plan. I don't see a lot of support for that plan in this thread, conservative or otherwise. So I'm not clear what "conservatives" have to do with it. I was just pointing out there is already a path to free college, and since few take it, I guess there isn't a big need for free college.
No, I was connecting Conservatives to the concept of the US being not being able to pay for college to all citizens.
And conservatives are now saying we can afford free college? I mean, was that covered at CPAC and I missed it?
If we can afford a mandatory military service scheme we're every servicemen gets free college afterwards, then we can afford the free college without the mandatory service.
" All citizens' don't belong in college; maybe 10% can make use of it. Most jobs created don't need college level education. 'College' isn't real college anymore anyway, it's just 13th through 16th grade' for the socially promoted.
OK, but only one guy seems to be suggesting that, not all, most, or even a large minority of conservatives. So I'm trying to figure out how you decided that conservatives somehow determined we could afford this. I don't think that particular meeting ever happened.
I was discharged in 72. We still had draftee's. But don't get me wrong I met a lot of good men. I am just saying that not everyone that wears a uniform is a hero. My number 2 daughter just got out of the Navy and she had the same problem. She had a problem with people stealing her stuff while aboard ship and during training.
I was working in Basic Training in the early to mid-80's. I was a reserve Drill Sergeant at Fort Benning and Fort Jackson. We discussed our experiences with different kinds of trainees and came to many conclusions. I suppose our comments were recorded somewhere, but I wouldn't know how to access them now. I also trained females. Long days and short nights. We were exhausted, up at 0330 and in the rack at 2200.
As I consider the question of military enlistment and our forces I think people should sign up figuring to stay in for at least 15 years. The military cannot guarantee that long, but they should offer it. Modern military weapons/ships/aircraft/tanks are so complex that it takes years to learn how to use them. It takes years to develop the experience to become an effective soldier/sailor/airman/marine. Minimum time in should be 8 years unless the individual screws up along the way. If I could I'd probably not accept married enlistees. I might allow people to marry after 8 years or so. Being in the military is hard work and it is often dangerous and it takes commitment. So be committed.
Plenty of times. Which is perfectly fine by me, this job isn't for everybody. Some of them didn't want the structured life of the military, some didn't want to leave home quite yet, some felt like military service was "beneath" them, some just wanted to keep partying and getting drunk every day. Like I've said before this job is a hard life and it's not for everyone. Hell there are plenty of days when I wake up very proud and grateful that I get to have this career, and there are other days when I would love nothing more than to trade places with one of the people I see walking around this little town who get to live normal lives.
Yes. I also want people without any children to pay for taxes for public schools. That's how it works.
People can benefit from public school with no more justification than they pay taxes. Why should this not also be true for government paid college? Why the arbitrary requirement that people also participate in mandatory military service?
It is a requirement we currently have. People get money for college if they join the military. Its called an incentive. If you wish to fo to college on your own that is fine.
Right but IN BOURNE'S MODEL (IE the thing I'm debating) there is mandatory military service with everyone getting free college afterwards. If the government can afford free college for everyone with mandatory military service, then they can afford free college for everyone without mandatory military service.
Sure they could. They could give college benefits now that they give to the military. But then it would not be an incentive
