I totally agree that that picture is disgusting and racist and I had to do some deep thinking and re-examining of my own beliefs to determine why that filled me with such disgust but I found many of the redneck jokes funny. It came down to that picture depicts negatively, a whole race of people. There is no up side to that. The redneck ones there was grudging and often open admiration for the inventiveness - even if that inventiveness was more than a little "off".

Though, for me the question is, is the comment about a characteristic that the person cannot control i.e. Ethnicity or skin colour or is it about something they can choose i,e, how to dress and live?

Mind you I LOVE "blonde" jokes but then I AM a blonde so I can get away with it

 

Bower, "idiot librul" is not directed at any ethnic or racial group. It is an ad hominem insult directed at a political philosophy. It is not persuasive argument, but in the US political speech does not have to be polite, or even rational. So, relax - you are safe.

 

Notice that the "blond jokes" always target a blond woman. Of course they are funny but they are really disguised attacks on women which are more acceptable than the less subtle dismissal, "ditsy dame".

I am sure you are searching for a blond male cartoon. I will celebrate with you if you succeed in finding one.

 

I does not really affect me as it is a bit like Dolly Partons comment on"dumb Blonde" i.e. "It dos not affect me because i am not dumb or blonde". Certainly being called a liberal only upsets me in that in Australia liberals are the conservatives whereas Labor voters are the equivalent of your liberals. But for the life of me I cannot see the difference between "redneck" jokes and "liberal" jokes.

Some of that is that we would rather go after the politician than the people - but then we have fewer people dedicated to A political ideology and more who pick and choose which items are more important to them. (Mandatory voting makes a difference)

Mind you my absolute favourite joke of all time is the one about the three blondes walking along a beach and they find a genie's bottle. They give it a rub and out comes the genie who says "You have three wishes - one wish each!!" So the first blonde says "I want bigger bluer eyes!" KAZAM! She gets her wish. Redneck does not apply to all whites. No one would call a lawyer from Boston, a stock broker from New York, or a computer programmer from Silicon Valley, a Redneck. ****** on the other hand is used against all blacks, regardless of social class.

Review the Wiki list in more detail of racial and ethnic slurs and you may understand the difference between "liberal" and "redneck". The fact that many working class whites in the South who are dismissed as "rednecks" are in fact liberal and live in far more integrated communities than many liberal enclaves in the North.

Racist and ethnic slurs do not always target an entire race. The term "redneck" targets a racial group. It is just a crude racial slur.
