Helps? I'm sure it does. But again, we were expected to read this in HS without any German lessons. Can you explain why you think the author is mentally inferior to the Germans?

I was never taught to be able to read Gothic print while in High School. All of the text books were printed in your typical English lettering including text books for learning German.

But in high school German classes it wasn't uncommon to occasionally coming across something printed in German that used Gothic type.

I knew a girl who majored in German in college and many of her books were printed using Gothic type. I could be wrong but I think it's also referred to "blackletter." (?)

I've noticed in research libraries when I pick up a book printed in German and published before 1950 the print is usually Gothic.

From news reports there's all sorts of "nazi" fears because of this surge in votes for the AFD, I think though it follows the global trend, we've seen a swing to the right in Britain, US, Australia, France. For these right wingers to hang on or grow they're going to have to gain mainstream credibility within government... we'll see how they go.

I had no idea it would only take one day for the AFD to be at each other's throat.
Today, Frauke Petry, chairwoman of the AFD and probably their most well-known figure announced publically she would not be a member of the AFD's parliamentary group in the Bundestag. I'm not sure if that has ever happened before in any party that made it into parliament.
Jörg Meuthen, another prominent guy in the party, has fiercely criticized her in the last couple of weeks because of her lack of support for both of their leading candidates during the campaign. Petry now could become an independent member of the Bundestag. André Poggenburg, member of the party executive committee, demanded her to leave the party for good.
Turf battles are a normal thing in every political party, but far right parties are traditionally best at this.

Germany has been caught in its own "tolerance trap" since WW2.

They are terrified of any association with the Nazi's/national socialism.

Fast forward 70+ years and enough are getting sick of letting in large numbers of islamic immigrants, who are largely unskilled, and sometimes violent.

Part of the reason for the "swing to the right" is because leftist govt's (often globalist marxists) are incapable of addressing this issue.

Another yank with carefully thought out bumper sticker wisdom. If one is 6,000 or 7,000 miles away and looks at one percent of the tip of the iceberg, then one could arrive at your conclusion.
Nazis is a plural without apostrophe. You wouldn't write two dog's or three cat's, would you?

Would you argue that people who to this day cling to a monarch are intellectually equal to other Europeans?

Now you sound like an irritated Brit, irritated perhaps by the rejection of the left in Germany.

Nope. I live in Germany, I'm not British and I'm certainly not irritated by anything except for the enormous amount of ignorance displayed by our yank friends on this forum concerning, in this case, German issues. I hope the plural-s didn't irritate you.
I know from first hand experience what the political landscape here looks like, how society works, and what the current political issues are.
Whenever you folks start putting sense into something you obviously do not really understand, I usually have a good laugh.
Sure, everybody can believe whatever they want but being familiar with more than just 1% of the issue and not drowning in stereotypes and horribly superficial bumper sticker nonsense isn't a bad idea in my book.

Its looking like it was a rejection of the left, and to the benefit of the right.

germany learned nothing from the second world war and i'm not going to pretend i'm capable of feeling surprise anymore, since every day continues to be dumber than the last.

good thing german antifascists are among the finest in the world. world's going to need them.

if you don't want people to call you a fascist, maybe you should try not associating with parties that base their politics on authoritarian xenophobia and jingoistic nationalism

Or maybe at some point people stop caring about the smears lefties fling and start voting for their own best interests?

What interests of yours are represented by neofascist politicians? The Trumps, LePens, Putins, Farages of the world, they range from comically oafish to outright sinister. I can't imagine anyone genuinely thinking they're a wise choice for a representative

    The question presupposes things.

You should be asking why you don't understand why these people are gaining traction.

But as I always say-one of the problems with the left are they lack introspection.

You are in for a rough 8 or 10 years at least.

I understand. Capitalism is in crisis and people are blaming it on the immigrants. The left has been on the defensive for long enough that we haven't been ready to reach out and put forward a positive program that will attract people. Ethnic nationalism is giving people the false hope that protectionist policies can bring back eras that simply cannot return. People hollering about how muslims are evil or something has really caught n.

I was hoping to make you put it in your own terms, make you talk about what specifically appeals to you.

Capitalism isn't in crisis, but thats the lefty narrative because it gives an "in" to marxism.

I fully support the left going on the offensive, because its where they lose the most.

Time for all of the closet marxists to come out of the closet.

Capitalism regularly experiences crises. The looming automation crisis is just the most insurmountable.

Capitalism experiences corrections, which enables it to adapt. Commie nations never figured this out.

Somehow, capitalism has tackled mass production, changes in transportation, and technology.

    So cool story bro.

corrections that objectively make people's live suck. that's just a euphemism for crashes. capitalism was borne out of mass production, changes in transportation, and technology. it's allowed for a web of logistics to be built that has enabled to most startling rape of the third world possible, all in the pursuit of building worthless knick-knacks to make a quick buck off of. The automation crisis can't be surmounted because it removes labor from the equation entirely., making the divide between laborers and capitalists entirely about who has the fortune to own capital and who does not. It'll be a return of the aristocracy.

You have a worldview predicated on the idea that the numbers getting bigger is good, regardless of the lived reality of people suffering.
