I was fondled by a guy in a van offering me free french fries.....I just hate them. May be because we were forced to eat sooooooooo many growing up. Not the good instant ones mind you, but the nasty real ones. My parents would buy them by the bushel.....

Rutabagas are far better than potatoes. Turnips are another good substitute.

You were fondled by Ronald McDonald?

Never trust a person dressed like a clown.
    That's a rule.
    Not even on Halloween.

    Really.

Do you like sweet potatoes? Sweet potato fries are great.

I like parsnips. Turnips I can do in small quantities. I like Jicama better as far as root veg in that general type

I like sweet potatoes better than real potatoes but not by much. I actually need to harvest mine in the next week or so. Potato soup or buried in similar chowder type eats is about the only way I don't find real potatoes kind of disgusting.

Pretty much anything you can do with a potato or raw. I like it raw. Cooked it has not a lot of flavor so it is a good filler that picks up flavor. raw it tastes like pears.

Buy the smaller ones. Microwave for a total of 12 - 16 minutes to get rid of the wax and make them easy to peel and cut up.

    This is an easy recipe:
    INGREDIENTS:

5 oz. peeled and diced rutabaga, ½” dice or smaller

    2 oz. chopped onion

    1 T. bacon grease

Dash each of salt and black pepper

DIRECTIONS: Heat bacon grease in non-stick skillet and saute chopped onion over high heat until ½ done. Add diced rutabaga to skillet and saute, turning often until rutabaga is fairly tender. This will take about 15 minutes of cooking.

This is a really good one from The Low Carb Diet:

    Three Cheese Hashbrown Casserole

    6 slices bacon

    1/4 lb bulk pork sausage

    2 cups shredded rutabaga

    4 eggs

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

    3/4 cup ricotta cheese

Bake or pan fry bacon. Drain and crumble. Brown the sausage in a small skillet. While those are cooking, place shredded rutabaga in a microwavable bowl with 2 tbsp water. Cook on high power in the microwave for 2 minutes. Drain and cool.

In a large bowl, beat eggs. Stir in the crumbled bacon, browned sausage, all the cheeses and the shredded rutabaga.

Coat an 8 inch square casserole dish with bacon grease. Pour in the casserole mixture and smooth the top with a spatula.

Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool 10 minutes before cutting into 6 serving

I made a banana pudding from scratch yesterday. As I was cracking the 6th egg for its yolk, I wondered what the hell possessed me to do it. It wasnt the same as I remember my mothers... her custard was thinner and not as rich. Oh well, maybe I'll try again someday.

Ive never grown sweet potatoes. I planted red potatoes a few year back and the ones I missed keep coming back. The gift that keeps giving. I was surprised the first time I saw them come back because the ground here can freeze solid and several inches deep for a few months.

    Clam chowder. Mmmmm.

You can chowder anything you want really. Don't need to limit yourself to the traditionals. Sweet potatoes are easier to grow in the red clay south. them other devils tend to like more northern soil. I grow regular potatoes but it took building a bed just for that to do it as they do not play well with heavy clay soil. I get potatoes growing out of my compost pile. They are good like that at least even if they taste like poo.

That's the absolute best diet recipe I ever read!
    Sign me up!

Seriously that sounds great and I will try it. Thing is whats the best way to peel that rutabaga without using the microwave. I don't use a microwave. Im old fashion. lol
In reality it was a long drawn out discussion about molecular structures and microwaves and I threw in the towel.
Ok Honey. Whatever you say. I wont use the microwave.

They seem to do better in 5 gal buckets if you keep them watered and aren't going for a billion of them.

You gotta be josh'n. Potatoes are a monumental staple.
    I remember reading that Potatoes { that aren't overcooked }
are somewhat brain food.Potatoes are The most Important vegetable.
One can go without Onions or carrots or tomatoes.
    Without lettuce or pickles { cucumbers }
but never the Immortal and indispensable and versatile potato.
Granted a raw potato is not much fun.
But then so too is a Raw Post.
    I can do Raw Posts.

    No kidding.
That would be cool because I can grow them on the deck. Im already getting excited for next year. lol

Can I take sweet potatoes and cut them into sections where I can see an eye. Dust them with corn starch and plant them? It makes no sense to me that I would soak a sweet potato to grow and then tear off the growth and root that.

Low carbs not low calories. Unless you are on a low carb diet limit consumption.

You could put them in an oven long enough to melt the wax and soften the surface. 45 mins 325 would probably do the trick.

I knew there had to be a catch to it.

Next time I see a rutabaga when I go shopping Im going to get it. Hopefully we like it. Any new vegetable is a good vegetable.
