"preaching abstinence" at least to teenagers isn't enough. You have to take active measures to bring it about.

Not allowing them to be in situations for them to be alone with a member of the opposite sex.

This isn't rocket science you know

I'm sure a great many parents are able to control their teenagers without "locking them up" don't you think.

Not giving them money. Not giving them access to a vehicle. You really think there are not ways to prevent people from doing things they want aside from "locking them up"??

How do you know? I've known many teenagers such tactics worked quite well with. You making the common "humans are no more than animals" assertion that I completely detest. Humans (even teenagers) are quite capable of self control and restraint.

Let me tell you as an expert in adolescent behavior, . If they want to do something they will find a way. And when you put all these limitations on your adolescence you are slamming the door on communication and showing you do not trust them. Something else you were missing is as adolescents separate from the parents, which is not only healthy but necessary, their peers become important.
I recently did a workshop with parents of adolescents and one woman said and I quote, “I am the perfect parent I supervise parties at my house and I am very strict with my adolescent , but I didn’t realize that someone had a bottle of vodka hidden in the shower” A touching moment in that workshop was a father who was outraged that his son pierced his ear without his permission and he went on a diatribe. Then a woman said, “I wish that was my problem, my daughter runs away and is into drugs” She tried to put it into perspective for him but it didn’t work. You have to be very careful with teenagers because they are separating from you and as i said that is healthy and necessary

I thought sex education for more than 20 years and I can tell you that teenagers experiment. I try and encourage abstinence..And some wait and some don’t... but they certainly should be prepared if they decide to be sexual. Something that is also interesting is my kids would journal to me. They would share the most confidential things because I was safe. And one thing I learned over the years parents that are too strict and up quite often not communicating with their own children. Did you ever have a drink of alcohol without your parents knowing? Did you ever try smoking a cigarette or pot? We just have to hope for the best

Balderdash. I have a teenage daughter you know. Amazing how parents several decades ago managed to keep their teenagers in line but that parents supposedly are unable to now.

I don't think people have change that much.

We already do. I can get you ten kids tomorrow and you will get a monthly stipend of at least six hundred. As long as you are not looking for a perfect little white baby

Except adoption isn't a medical procedure as is abortion.

You: ""subsidizing adoption would be a great *voluntary* way to encentivise an alterative to abortion"""

*voluntary* ...Another way to say force/brainwash women to give up 9 months of their lives for someone else.....in another thread I didn't see men lining up to do the same...

Ya, talk Republicans, who want to cut funding to social services that help CHILDREN, into subsidizing pre-natal care, medical costs, housing , food, and health care for millions more kids....yuppers, you go right ahead..

I have no idea what you're talking about or, more importantly , what it has to do with the topic....

You forget that modern American history (post World War Two to present) is my specialty which I've taught for more than a decade.

    So I know a great deal about the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Well, you couldn't have learned much if you think teenagers didn't have sex then....they have had sex since there WERE teenagers.....take the blinders off :)

The 50's-60's were NOT all "Ozzie and Harriet"....is that where you learned "history? :roflol::roll:

Didn't say they didn't have sex back then. But for the most part relationships between teenagers and young adults were in a more controlled environment. If a girl got pregnant, the boy who impregnated her was under heavy pressure to provide for her and the baby. To grow up and "do the right thing". Today that expectation is virtually non existent as parents routinely try to protect their sons from the consequences of their actions.

And once again, millions of people even in our modern era don't have premarital sex. If millions can do it (in that case not do it) then 100 million can.
