Louie Pasteur postulated his theory of "Germs" tiny invisible or unseen animals that cause infection, milk to spoil, wine to ferment, or turn to vinegar. He could not see them, he described their effects, in his research, and the process to kill bacteria in products is still called "Pasteurization" in his honour, science proved Pasteur was correct, and we can see microbes with various types of microscopes. Even Virus types can be seen with Electron microscopy.
