14 killed in tourist hot spot Cancun during bloody 36-hour span

From the late 1970's thru the late 1980's, a group of us rented a private home in the hills overlooking Acpulco. The crime we encounters was usually petty theft which is to be expected in any tourist area. In the 1990's things changed dramatically. Full auto fire on the Costera Miguel Aleman, the main avenue along the coast surrounded by tourist hotels. Robbery at gunpoint became commonplace and I see few if any attempts by the Mexican government to repair the damage caused by the drug runners in that once great vacation destination.
As far as ever returning? My firearm not allowed, no more vacations in Mexico for me.

The list you sight in your link relative to the 3 million people that go to Mexico to Vacation every year is pretty small

Laws, freedoms, and protections are different in America. Husband was driving a rental once just outside of Cancun. Mexican police pulled him over and demanded all of his cash or they were taking the rental and bringing him to a jail in Mexico. He had no choice but to pay them, it was around $250 that he had on him. As Americans, you can be targets in shithole countries like Mexico. I can find many other places to visit that are safer and nicer.
