You certainly have EVERY right to restate your point. I think we're here to develop points which may not be perfectly stated or totally proven as first posted. Blocking development would be counter to the purpose of the board, imho.

I agree that there is a meme along the line of "god helps those who help themselves". I agree with it not because I believe there is a god, but because benefit doesn't come from quitting, and CAN come from putting in real effort.

But, I don't see that as a suggestion that those unable to help themselves are to be abandoned.

 

We can all work to make our system more equitable or to be better by various other measures.

I believe there is a point where help becomes a necessity for some people. They rely on that help to survive.

During our great dust storms the people had no help...you either lived or died and it was up to you.

I feel that our current society makes too many people are reliable on help.

I do not believe that is what Jesus wanted.

You come to my door asking for food because your daughter is starving then you will get it.

Come asking 30 days from now because you are getting fed without having to work then that door shuts.

I believe this is what Jesus meant.

 

So the way you figure it, there's no difference between the motivation of those who give out of their own pockets and those who authorize government goons to extract it from others' pockets. Right?

So-called "liberals" (who are anything but liberal, based on what I see from this crowd) see a verse about helping the poor and think it's YOUR responsibility, not theirs. What they can't seem to get through their thick skulls is that Jesus spoke to each of us individually, not just to Republicans, so demanding that anyone other than themselves do the heavy lifting is not Biblical and misses the point of the scripture.

They are never around when the Church puts on a feed for the neighborhood, runs a necessities and food pantry, or gives out of it's own resources to pay someone's medical bills or utilities, so they don't now about it. We don't have press conferences bragging about it the way politicians do. They would rather have the government tax all of our money away so that we can't help the poor, and I have lost count of the times I have read someone advocating that Churches pay taxes. They want everyone on the government dole, they are easier to control that way. Vote the way we want you to vote or else.

And that's the whole crux of the matter. They don't care about the "poor", they care about their votes. The proof of that is, try telling them about your hardship if you are a conservative or a Christian and see what they tell you. Tell them about your health problems, they will blame it on you for being conservative or voting Republican because they know they can't get your vote.

In other words, get a job instead of gossiping on the internet.

Great point about churches being on the government dole.

People who donate their time and give food to soup kitchens and pantries come from all across the spectrum of society. The variety of people I have met while volunteering has been eye opening. Perhaps most significant of all are those who are only marginally better off themselves who give selflessly. Our local library has a donation point for food and it is interesting to see how parents teach their children to make donations too.

 

The government gives churches money?? Who knew.
