Unless you are a sportsman or hunter I see no reason for a gun, but it is nice to have a drivers license if only as a form of ID. But the day could come where you need to drive someone to the ER or just pick up some groceries.

 

I don't need skis or a tennis racket either. I don't need a full suspension mountain bike. I don't need a gun. (And don't have one) But all those things are fun. You might find painting fun but frankly you don't need paint, canvas, or brush. You don't need books or the internet. What do you need besides oxygen, water, and some calories?

 

I don't know what this thread has to do with guns, but if you don't need a gun, don't purchase one.
Obviously the ability to defend against attack in todays world is a need, and if you live in a high crime rate area of the country a gun just might be something you may have a need for, or a constant armed security service which most people cannot afford. When working evenings and nights in a major city, I found a gun necessary to get safely to/from my car to/from my workplace numerous times. I never had to actually do more than produce it for show though.

I don't think the other stuff would come automatically if free education means we all major in gender studies or ethnic studies. We could all work at Burger King, but who would know how to re-shingle your roof?
