Have you ever lived or stayed in rural America?

As for the Swiss, I like them, too. But their gun control system is designed specifically to address Switzerland's unique culture and territory. It wouldn't work in a large, fractious federation like the US.

Grew up in small town East Texas (population < 1,500) in the 70's and early 80's.

Then why do pro-gunners wax poetic about the Swiss?

Okay, then why don't you think there is any situation where it is okay to openly carry? Many people in rural areas open carry and nobody thinks anything of it because many people know one another and because hunting and shooting are generally a big part of the culture. I agree that there are some idiots who take open carry way too far, but that doesn't mean there aren't situations where open carry is appropriate.

Probably because Switzerland has a strong gun culture.

Democracies use the popular vote to elect their president. So long as we continue to use the Electoral College the US will continue to be a Republic. This is not semantics.

Amen brother. Time to demolish the UN HQ in New York and build a monument to local autonomy on the ashes.

But let’s be fair. The U.S. does protect the world from great dangers such as Democratic governments in Iran, Democratic elections in Vietnam, Democratic elections in Cuba, Democratic elections in Grenada, elected Presidents in Syria, non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction in Irak, and THE MOST PERILOUS COMMODITY OF ALL, oil in the Middle East:

If that's how you choose to define it far be it from me to interfere.

I support devolving political control to local communities, I always support independence movements, I am very supportive of bilateral relations with friendly nations.

I just think democracy should be practiced close to the individual where he can make a difference.

I don't support being insular. Neither am I socially conservative. I am pro-choice, pro-gay, just not anti-speech. On this I align more closely with the ACLU of the 1970s.

You didn't read the article or you wouldn't have replied with this
fairy tale. I guess you're afraid to read the article.

Every one in Swizterland can get a gun from the government.
    Go ahead. Read it.

It seems however that my 'blanket opinion ' of you was 100% accurate. You are not American, and no more of an 'international person' than anyone with a connection too the internet..

Now you are saying everyone? You are telling a half truth that isn't relevant to this discussion. Purchase not give away.

Firearms legislation in Switzerland allows the free purchase of semi-automatic, but not fully automaticfirearms by Swiss citizens and foreigners with permanent residence.[note 1][1] Permits for concealed carrying in public are issued sparingly.[note 2][2] The acquisition of fully automatic weapons, suppressors and target lasers likewise requires special permits issued by the cantonal firearms office[3]. Use of hollow-point and soft-point ammunition is limited to hunting.[4]

Nobody mislead anyone. You see we use electoral college to choose a president,
will don't use the mod rule democracy style.

    The USA isn't a democracy, it's a representative republic.

How does that compare with European wars? Was there ever a time in Europe when there wasn't a war going on somewhere, big and small?

It's Europeans who come up with ideas liike Nazism, Fascism, Communism, Socialism, etc. and then attack and murder each other, and millions of others, trying to put them into effect. The EU was just another goofy idea but at least this one didn't cause as much bloodshed as their previous miscalculations.

Meanwhile the Americans, with their First and Second Amendments, are one of the world's oldest continuing democracies and remains the World's only Superpower.

I wouldn't take these anecdotal stories as being factual. I've heard similar claims about Europeans listening in to two American tourists talking. Meanwhile I work in international tourism and I'd rather deal with Americans than Europeans, with few exceptions, any time.

It is not about whether someone is nice to deal with ... the discussion was centered historical and geographical ignorance.

An "Historical and geographical ignorance' apocryphal story coming from an anonymous internet poster who clearly doesn't care for Americans? I assumed you'd be more discerning. Never mentioned the world 'nice'.

Have you never listened to Bill Maher ? It is not like this is some big secret. You claim to be involved in international tourism but it seems that you yourself have never toured the world.

It is not my fault that our education system is pathetic. What is pathetic is you trying to demonize the messenger for pointing out the obvious.

What 'messenger'? It was an apocryphal story that, with variations, has been floating around for generations. I've worked in nine countries and visited any more and this chestnut is familiar anywhere a group of Europeans gather. Of course you're free to believe it, and you will.
