Does Switzerland have the lowest homicide rate?
Honduras "bans citizens from owning guns" and has the "highest homicide rate in the entire world." Switzerland, with a similar population, "requires citizens to own guns" and has the "lowest homicide rate in the entire world."Sep 30, 2015

There is a misconception here and I think I know what it is. Let us use the popular, gun-nutter phrase, "It ain't the gun that kills .... it's the person pulling the trigger who kills." If we use this idea it is easier to understand. We are dealing with two things: guns (the object) and the person (the one pulling the trigger).

Now, you use some sort of statistic to prove something that doesn't really address the issue at hand. You should be looking at the facts more closely and apply the gun-nutter phrase equally. You admit yourself that your preferred example comes from Switzerland. So let's start again but be more earnest this time. Here we go > > > "It isn't the gun that kills ... it's the Swiss person pulling the trigger who kills." Do you see the difference now? The Swiss population do not have the same propensity to commit murder as Americans do. The reasons why this is most certainly true brings us straight back to the theme of this thread: DEMOCRACY - Switzerland has oodles of it while the U.S. has doodly squat.

So ....... the phrase "ban guns" is ambiguous. The proper way to express the notion would be "ban guns in the U.S."

I feel like we get one of these threads almost to the letter, like once a quarter.

Every time I answer with the same words you did, I am surprised how many people don't know it.,

Is the sky blue or some shade of blue?
Can we call this country a Republic without referring to the fact that our representatives are democratically elected?
Is there a difference between a democratic republic and a constitutional republic? Are we not talking about the power of the people to choose representatives? How is that not democratic?
Of course this is not a pure democracy, but a type of democracy.

I think this explains it all...
    https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-12-17/paul-craig-roberts-exposes-myth-western-democracy
How does the West get away with its pretense of being an alliance of great democracies in which government is the servant of the people?

Nowhere in the West, except possibly Hungary and Austria, does government serve the people.
Who do the Western governments serve? Washington serves Israel, the military/security complex, Wall Street, the big banks, and the fossil fuel corporations.

The entirety of the rest of the West serves Washington.

Nowhere in the West do the people count. The American working class, betrayed by the Democrats who sent their jobs to Asia, elected Donald Trump and the American people were promptly dismissed by the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton as “the Trump deplorables.”

The Democrats, like the Republicans, serve power, not the people.

In Europe we see the squashing of democracy everywhere.

Superior propaganda and advanced techniques in dumbing down the population. That's how.

It certainly does look that way.

    Yes.

It will be a very long time before we descend to U.S. standards of Fascism but we definitely have the pedal to the metal, hell-bent on catching up.

    Laughable.

Americans and Israelis stand for democracy. The U.N. is just an exclusive club where third world dictators and despots hang out to rail against the West.

Sadly, you have hit the nail on the head. While Trump rails about being ripped off by NATO and almost all of America's other allies and vassal states, it is American billionaires and the Capitalist class they support in the other nations of the Atlantic or Washington consensus that have been the overwhelming beneficiaries of the economic and political conditions forced upon the world by our supposed "democratic" system.

One only needs to study Piketty or Black to understand just how the people of the world are held in debt peonage and subservience to a system that serves the wealth and power of corporations

It depends on how the system is set up. In the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and probably others, it is quite possible to have a leader who was elected by a minority of the electorate. In fact Theresa May is now PM of the UK despite having nobody outside of government voting for her.

Yes, I know they stand for democracy by their words, but by their actions they practice military aggression and apartheid. Actions speak louder than words.
