Well, I don't really know what to think of this. I would like to see high speed rail, but apparently the state of California is not capable of getting it done.

Now they owe the federal government a lot of money. Do they even have it?

$77 billion down the drain and the left is going insane over a mere fraction of that for our border security.

The money wasted on this train amounts to criminal negligence.

This train deal started when I was living in CA, and even then they predicted the train wouldn't have enough passengers to turn a profit and ticket prices would be through the roof. That was in 2012 when I left.

Yep; and all conceived and generated by the Left in the first place. What leftists never comprehend is that this stuff takes TIME and MONEY and that -- gasp! -- it also plays directly into the hands of corrupt bureaucrats and politicians.

    Funny.

One of your liberal cohorts in another thread was trying to convince us that Nixon did that because he was pressured by the democrats to create it.

One of you are wrong obviously so is it you or the other liberal?

Who says the EPA is the one behind all the environmental lawsuits?
And, Nixion just didn’t create the EPA by executive order, the creation of the EPA was ratified by Congress.

It looks like Newsom's plan may be to weasel out of paying the money back by building at least some portion of the project:

"Having admitted that the Democrat-led California government could not be relied on to handle complex building projects and failed on the key issues of oversight and transparency, Newsom refused to entirely let go of the high-speed rail dream — in part because he didn't want to give that $3.5 billion back to Trump.

"Abandoning high-speed rail entirely means we will have wasted billions and billions of dollars with nothing but broken promises, partially filled commitments and lawsuits to show for it," said the Democratic governor. "And by the way, I am not interested in sending $3.5 billion in federal funding that was allocated to this project back to Donald Trump."

As The Daily Wire noted Tuesday, the plan, as of now, is to complete only the Central Valley segment of the San Francisco-to-Los Angeles train. Newsom's admission that the project, which is now 11 years in the making, is not realistic fiscally comes after a series of delays and significant increases in estimated costs."

I did not know that! But I'm not surprised.

None of these backwoods flat earth types have the slightest idea what it is like to ride on a silent, smooth train that goes 300 mph and gets you from city center to city center faster than the airlines will, with 1/4 the hassle.

A well developed high speed rail network would enable people to commute from much farther away than they can now. Imagine from Upstate New York to Manhattan, Peoria to Chicago or St Louis, Chatanooga to Atlanta.

Such a network would make cites that you have to change planes two or three time to get to much more accessible to business travellers.

But, then, I doubt that any of them has ever been anywhere other than Vegas or Disney World one time.

The bullet train project wasn't canceled, but it has been significantly scaled back. The federal grants were for the central valley section of the high speed rail, which is currently still underway. Also, the deadline for these federal grants is the end of 2022, meaning the state of California would only owe that money back to the federal government if they failed to build a railway that covers the central valley by the end of 2022.

In regards to whether or not the state would be capable of paying that money back, it is worth noting that the state of California's current budget runs at a $30 billion surplus, meaning annually the state is currently gaining $30 billion more in revenue than what it spends
