Oh dear Robert, you seem to be confused yet again. Most aircraft carriers in the world run on conventional power, including the large British & Chinese carriers. There is no reason any German carrier would need nuclear power.
Germany has teh 2nd largest stockpile of Plutonium in the world. Actually almost 2500 tons. We have so much of that stuff, that we have storage problems.
1) The U.S. can't build a major supercarrier for you. The only shipyard capable of doing so is tied up for the rest of this century building new carriers for the U.S. Navy. The only change that might happen there is a speed up in the rates that carriers are built for the U.S. 2) You say the U.S. has become "untrustworthy and not a real partner".? I assume you know that even if Germany goes all out to construct a carrier force that President Trump will long be out of office before it hits the water. We might well have two or three different presidents and a half dozen congresses before that happens for that matter. So basically plans on current politics is foolish. 3) I would be happy if Germany would just fund and equip their army and air force decently.
Actually this has happened a number of times. While people will frequently point out such instances as a sign that carriers are vulnerable it ignores the fact that allies submarine commanders have huge advantages in exercises against American ships that would not be present in war time.
You must admit, that our Delfin-class subs are very advanced and danegrous weapons. Even more so with the german supercavitation Torpedo which eraches sueprsonic speeds under water and is steerable. The fact tht they create no noise and not even hot water like nuclear powered subs do, makes them very dangerous systems. As for building a carrier, i assume it would be constructed on a german yard, like Blohm & Voss. If USA is part of the construction process i assume i might send engineers. I dont understand your comment regarding that. It was trump who fights so hard for that contract. So then Germany would give US that contract and you say US could not fullfill? Does this mean Trump would take the money but not deliver?
It does seem that way. Aircraft Carriers are for force projection, and I don't get how that would fit into any sort of coherent German naval strategy. Maybe it's just a vanity project, "Make Germany Great Again," But it doesn't seem to have much actual utility, even if it's the most technically advanced carrier in the world.
It does have when you see Merkels planning. She sees the time right for Germany / EU to stand for their own interests. Old partners break away so you need to stand your own ground.
Merkel wants a german Aircraft carrier. A very expensive toy for a country that won't use its military.
We have a yearly budget surplus of 60 billion €. This means we could build 9 aircraft carriers like the general ford each year...without even noticing it in the budget.
Military procurement deserves it's own thread, or multiple threads. The officer you spoke to isn't wrong per se, but his description is incomplete. There are multiple budgets for multiple things, so there may be plenty of money for new computer monitors, but no remaining funds for building maintenance. I know someone who worked in one of the most high tech facilities in the military, but they couldn't get a mop.
Right. I get the whole idea of the EU wanting to decouple from the US, but that's different from creating an entire ability to project military power worldwide. But hey, maybe there is a long term strategy to do just that.
I suppose another issue would be the support group to protect the carrier. You need several missile ships to provide surface to air capability, and defence against submarines too. All that costs money above the cost of the carrier, even if you can build it. The US has the Aegis (sp) radar system, does Germany have anything like that? Nuclear powered killer subs? Etc etc.
We have a passive radar system that is more advanced than aegis and can detect the F-35. I think Merkel is well aware of the fact that a carrier needs protection. She said a carrier eats fleets, which means a whole infrastructre must be build around it.
Do you mean Merkel who actually made the statement that i posted and supports her sucessor AKK to achieving it? And i thought you love Merkel. Good you finally see her delusion as well.
Merkel is open to discuss European defense projects, maybe a European carrier, which I think is fantasy, but it will not be a German carrier, which you think. That is fantasy land. The billions in surplus, your 60 billions, is nation wide, states, cities counties and federal. Federal surplus is around 10 to 15 billion. Germany does not have your super torpedo and all the other fantasies you spout
The Germans have a thing about wanting to be a great naval power. The irony is, it was a bunch of cheap U-boats that almost brought Britain to her knees. Germany's capital ships did some surface raiding work, but they were never played anything close to a decisive role in either world war. I shouldn't say "either". I don't know enough about WW1.
As usual you talk bullshit The Barracuda supercavitation torpedo is build and developed by Diehl BGT Unterwasserlaufkörper Der superkavitierende Unterwasserlaufkörper ist ein Technologie-Demonstrationsprogramm zur Nahbereichsabwehr von Unterwasserzielen. Now get away as usual i look at you with mercy
Ein Versuchsgeraet. Which is a Test object, research, nothing more. Which means Germany has no such torpedo. Besides the program never got past the research and test objects.
5 test subjects does not make a deployable weapon, and your aircraft carrier when ever it arrived would be just as susceptible. It’s not just building one, which you have no experience of but the huge amount of knowledge needed to operate a carrier.
