If you were to look up Hong Kong's semiautonomous status, the transfer from the UK to China, the different currency and judicial system within Hong Kong from mainland China, and the broader rights, and freedoms within Hong Kong from that of mainland China, and the context of these continuing protests, and riots beyond the criminal in Taiwan you should begin to see what I mean.
A man was killed clearing bricks from a roadway, looks to be an anti-protest group vs protesters with bricks being thrown at the time. Note: Event is in video, man was killed. In other news, both men injured on monday from a gunshot and the burning are still in the hospital. A Justice secretary was apparently mobbed in London by protesters there.
I hope that they get what they want. If the government of China takes off the "kid gloves", then it just shows that it is one of the worst of the criminal organizations that calls itself a government. The statists here are slavering over the prospect of watching people agitating for freedom be punished, disappeared, and shot in the back of the head or forced into labor for decades.
Likely the protesters are already marked men, they are going for broke because there's no walking away
But if they gained independence would it be a good thing? HK gets 80% of it's drinking water from China, that would stop. HK makes nothing, that's all done in China so that would stop. Natural gas is piped in from China, that would stop. 90% of their food is.....you get the idea. The point is that HK is a small area with a large population and they are reliant on mainland China for many, many things which China can stop at a moments notice.
HK human freedom index is #3 in the world, not sure how much more they want it. also I don't think vandalizing or beating bystander will make CCP to bow down, its counter productive.
The human freedom index is one important metric, but it definitely does not apply accurately in the case of Hong Kong, and this is especially true as of late. China in general is not a free country, and while Hong Kong enjoys more freedom than mainland China, that is not saying much. I am not saying rioting: beating and vandalizing is the way to go, or at least, long-term, and do keep in mind that I worry about my gf's safety too there, even though she lives in a very nice and secure area there. I also believe the human freedom index is flawed in how it evaluates freedom, but that is a conversation for a different thread.
China is involved and this can be seen in any news outlet or a conversation with people who live in Hong Kong. Might China get more involved, yes, probably.
China mainly leave HK alone, its against CCP own interest to intervene, if china intervene too much, company will move to siingapore or Tokyo . HK is #1 in economic freedom in the world and china want to keep that way. If China really encroach deeply into HK affairs, its index would drop to 50ths or below. HK protester screw up, instead isolate/piss off mainland Chinese, they should get their support or sympathy. Now CCP tv are in full blast mode in china on HK riot showing them beating/vandalizing mainland Chinese/their properties, so the protest become widely unpopular in china. HK is too small compare to mainland, without Chinese support they never gonna get what they wanted. China is not gonna let HK become independent, gonna be WWIII if that happen, no country gonna say HK is Not part of China, look at Taiwan.
such as, your link? if they involved, don't you think its freedom index would drop significantly, don't you think this protest won't happen in the 1st place, cause they can just crush it easily. the only thing I know is they arrest some HK book writer and send to china, that's about it. conversation is not fact, HK resident believe a lot thing(they also believe they are better than mainland Chinese), but a lot news are just for the seek of viewer number. also why Macao never had these type protest
Again the freedom index is heavily flawed and biased as well, and you look at the source of the index, you can begin to se this. China is very much involved, but they do much through Carrie Lam and via being puppeteers of the Hong Kong government. There are many forces at play right now within Hong Kong.
you could said the same for HK under british rule, all british governor were from UK, not even local. so they are puppeteer of Britain? so please show me the link that says china change the basic law, cause I haven't found it yet. perceive vs fact is different things. how come HK never got universal suffrage under Britain 156 years of rules, yet they expect an authoritarian government like china to give them that?
You don't know what China does, because our press doesn't give actual accounts. Instead it uses terms such as 'alleged' or 'we believe so', that way they can instill false impressions into people's minds. Hitler and Lenin should be very proud of us - wherever they are. Ode To Our Strategic Ambiguity Foreign Policy .I'm singing now a wondrous song To tell the world that right is wrong and what you thought was naught before was just a lie that you had bought - from us - Jeannette
Right. I am not disputing the horrors of British colonialism, like say, for example when splitting up India and Pakistan. Also, you are misquoting me in the next section of your sentence; where did I say they changed the law? Please read more carefully. What I said is they are working through the Hong Kong government and trying to get more laws passed. Xi, has been very vocal of his support of Lam, and China has threatened to intervene as well.
Jeanette, I have friends and business partners in China and Hong Kong. My girlfriend lives in Hong Kong. I also read press in both China and Hong Kong as well.
I am confused. Would a link showing the flaws in the freedom index "prove" the bias? I would say providing links to show evidence is the best I can do, and besides the onus is on you to show the freedom index is accurate since you, and not I brought it up. Did you move to the US from mainland China?
I do agree current Carrie Lam is working with Xi, and I also think protest has right to peaceful protest, but their ways are counter productive. What china most afraid of is the protest spill over to Shenzhen etc, but as long as HK protester are isolating mainland Chinese, CCP don't have anything to be afraid of. I don't think china will intervene, currently a lot HK resident are getting tired of disruption, China just gonna let HK rot.
when you said its bias, you need provide evidence that shows it. otherwise, its just an opinion. kind like i'm writing, its just my 2c
When you said the freedom index is high for Hong Kong, you need to provide not only evidence of that, but why it is accurate; the index comes from very conservative think-tanks who use business as a major metric. Of course, I can provide links, but as I said, that would be a separate thread.
