I expect to cease to exist. Just as "I" didn't exist before I was born, "MY" existence will end at death. While I believe that life is amazing, a miracle if you will, I believe that our conciousness is nothing but a complex set of electrochemical processes. Once those processes stop, "WE" cease to exist.

I believe that there was an actual person who we commonly call Jesus. I believe that the legends were built around him. Maybe he promoted them. Maybe he didn't.

I think that religion grew out of man's fear of the dark. The fear of the unknown. I think that the gods offered explanations for what they didn't understand. There was a god for every event. Now, the Catholics have a Saint for everything. It's pretty much the same concept.

Culture, not easy access to guns. Many places have easy access to guns but don't have a murder problem. When you don't value human life, it's easier to murder people. In my opinion, the latin culture does not have the same value structure as the more European culture. Same goes for much of Africa where you also see a super high murder rate.

 

When people (not humans) have no value for their own life, they lack compassion or respect for anyone else's life, and as such do not belong in a civilized society.
