I mean, these people's lives are precious and they considered trash by their society.

Contrary to what you might think, and my understanding of you thinking is equally hard to manage, no one wants war, no one likes war but war is a reality. As evil as was Hitler the wars he started were in what he believed Germany's interest. As with the Japanese. Your war in Vietnam which we then tried to salvage. Our Revolutionary War, our Civil War and on and on.

 

That statement is not completely accurate. Partly accurate, but not completely.

SOMEBODY wants war. Somebody who profits from war wants war because, obviously, it's good for the bottom line. Ike talked about it in 1961. Smedley Butler talked about it 30 years before that.

 

You misinterpret Ike and my statement is 99.99% correct the .001% the evil businessmen you seem think exist.

 

I'm not saying that I admire Napoleon, the point was to show that French fighting men are quite capable when properly lead and well equipped.

Yes, but you can't edit after having posted it. It's the answers that forced me to develop my own thought.

I don't know if I'm more or less optimistic than you. When you says "no one likes war", I don't think that average people like war either iranian, american or french people. But people in governments ? Some corporates ? I think they have a lot of interests in war. I'm probably more pessimistic than you on human nature, but maybe more optimistic by thinking that most wars could be easily avoided.

 

Why would American Soldiers join the military if they were just going to refuse to fight? Your question makes no sense to me. If they were not going to fight they should just do something else. That being said, all soldiers have a duty to disobey unlawful orders. An example would be an order to execute civilians. That would be illegal and a soldier would be duty bound to disobey those orders. But disobeying because there is a chance civilians might get hurt or killed would not qualify as an unlawful order. That's just war. War is hell.

About human nature, yeah, humans are tribal, war-like animals. As have been and always will be. Evolution has not made us peaceful and enlightened, but more efficient killers. That's just the way it is.

 

The only group I know that wants war are the radical Islamist wanting to spread their Sharia law on the world and end western culture and freedoms.

 

Well, many of the conservatives on this sight might as well BE Nazi's. Lord knows they display the ultra nationalistic and racist tendencies of the Nazi party.

 

Many American citizens join the military hoping to defend their country in some way.

18 years of military aggression brought under fraud is not defending their country. Many of us in Vietnam had the same experience, but not 18 years worth.

 

Not if the orders you are given are illegal. That doesnt make you a coward. It makes you a hero.

IOW, the soldiers themselves should defeat their designated purpose. Makes perfect sense. Every nation does it, we have global peace in our lifetime. Brilliant, truly....

 

We're not talking about illegal orders.

 

An order to blow up a world heritage site would be illegal. Trump had threatened to target cultural heritage sites. Any soldier would be doing the correct thing if he refused an order to destroy them.

It's clear at the time that he posted the OP @VotreAltesse bought into the hysteria that Trump was getting ready to launch a war against Iran. Being a European, he wanted America to lose, or at least suffer a major defeat.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only sane one. I knew there wasn't going to be any war but it was obvious that most of the left and probably some non left people thought that war was imminent.

 

The Left go on about war (some wars, Euro-centric wars) as if they are for peace.

What if your government changes those laws?
What if your enemy has no law whatsoever?

The political Left tell us that laws are to be disobeyed if they are against
what the Left believes. Should that apply to everyone?

 

They choose to be soldiers and choose to fight whenever needed, they were welcomed as heroes back home when arriving form duties somewhere else.
