Election betting odds on Trump dropped below 50% for the first time in a long time. I think Trump's toast. Americans don't particularly like braggarts (Trump couldn't get more votes than Hillary Clinton, of all people), and they really don't like politicians who prematurely spike the football. There's about a dozen Trump/Trump admin quotes that are really going to come back to haunt him. And a recession is guaranteed. It's just a question of how long it lasts.

We can kind of see now how we're going to deal with this virus. We're going to close up shop for awhile, tamp down the community spread rate, get testing up and running ala S. Korea style, ride out this first wave of infections (which is going to be a brutal couple of weeks), and then quarantine new outbreaks as they occur. We're a service-oriented economy, so the financial fallout will be severe. And for all that, it's going to be hard to keep this out of nursing homes and hospitals, so we're going to lose significant numbers of old and immuno-compromised people.

I think the landscape in Nov. will be one where tens of thousands of (mostly) old people have died, the virus has been under control for awhile, with occasional hot spots, there are a couple treatments that have some success, a vaccine is in clinical trials, the economic fallout from the world closing up shop for awhile will still be reverberating, and the debt/deficit will be YUGE. Who knows, though? There's a non-trivial chance Biden and/or Trump could die from this.

 

Yes, and I've bolded the part of your message that Republicans need to emphasize: Biden actually accused Trump of being xenophobic when he stopped travel from China. Clearly, the message we can take from that is that if Biden had been president, he would have allowed the Chinese flights in until the situation was much more dire - all in the interests of appearing welcoming to foreigners (even if they come from a country massively infected with a virus). The fact that we have held the death rate down to 50 (at the same time multiples more have died from regular flu) is to this early decision by President Trump.

 

Trump declared a national health emergency in Jan within days of the first case in the US, months before it was a pandemic and ordered the first quarantine in a half century. That’s leadership.
