The Supreme Court will likely award more immunity than they should here, but not the immunity the WH is asking for. Yes, their claims of absolute immunity are insane and authoritarian.

This isn't a new concept....obviously we all should know by know that the President is immune from federal indictment while President....we should also know from the SCOTUS case involving Bill Clinton that President's are not immune from civil liablity for acts that took place prior to becoming President.

With that said, the Courts have never ruled on State criminal or civil investigations.....I think the Court will rule if it's conduct prior to taking office it's fair game.

If you support higher taxes, Obamacare, and gun control, you are no different. If only people would unite against abuse of power. Lets make the government bigger and more powerful, right?

I am not a fan of either party. While people are fighting among each other over which side of the same ugly coin is better, the government grows bigger and more powerful. If you support higher taxes (Even if just for the rich) gun control, obamacare, etc. just keep in mind that that power will eventually be in the hands of someone like Trump.

I argued against the Patriot Act precisely because the power goes with the office, not the man. And I would remind Trump
fans that every bit of power that is handed to Trump, stays with the office, even if the next President is a Socialist.

Agreed. Too bad Americans are too busy fighting among each other to unite and oppose abuse of power.

Are you suggesting govt can only be big if everyone in it is above the law? Quite a leap there...

Its not a leap, but a series of little steps. Termites do more damage than all natural disasters combined. One tiny bite at a time!

You're a supported of big, powerful government. You should he thrilled about this!

A powerful govt doesn’t have to mean the elected officials are above the law for their actions as private citizens. False choice.
Sure a big powerful govt has plenty of other downsides, but that doesn’t have to be one of them.

fake news. If you really wanted that, you would want Obama and his Administration investigated, indicted and thrown in jail for their abuses of the very systems you claim to hold dear.

You just want socialist democrats in power

Obama was investigated for years - the Republicans held Congress. But if you want to investigate Obama, go ahead - we should
investigate every story that any talking head on TV or talk radio can think of.

You are incorrect and this thread is an example. They pass laws for you, but exempt themselves. You are on Trumps side of this issue. Maybe we should put the government in charge of more of our daily lives!!!

Correct, the President cannot be personally investigated by congress. Congress has no obligation to investigate anything. Their only constitutional obligation is to show up and legislate. Congress has assumed the authority to investigate matters relating directly to legislation, and this has been verified by the Supreme Court a number of times. They also have the authority for oversight of the administration (executive branch) in so far as verifying that their legislation is being faithfully administered; again since this is related to legislative responsibilities it too has been ruled constitutional by SCOTUS. Congress has no authority and certainly no obligation to investigate the president for anything and no authority to investigate the administration just to see what they might find.

I agree with your sentiment, but a clarification: congress has no authority to investigate crimes. They have authority to investigate only things related to legislative matters.

The cases currently before the supreme court are nothing in the least comparable to Clinton v. Jones

The NYC DA does not even have a specific target. He simply says he wants records to determine if there was some criminality in otherwise completely public matters, the same matters the SDNY has already said there was no criminality. Talk about a fishing exhibition extraordinary!

They may or the may not and any proceedings and his tax returns would remain protected and not released to the public. Any prosecution would be after he left office.

Don't know that to be true nor exactly which investigations you are talking about. But then we know how he and his wife and associates have obstructed every investigation even to the point of their cornies going to jail to refuse to give testimony to investigators, filing false affidavits and destroying evidence. Kinda draws out the time and expenses doesn't that.

He has no obligation to open his personal private records to anyone.

Tell me exactly what it is you think you are going to find in his tax records that the IRS hasn't already found were it something illegal or hasn't already been released in his huge financial disclosure forms he had been filing since he was a candidate?

I agree, but what consequences should there be for those talking heads who are revealed to just be spouting unfounded bullshit, and continue to do so after being debunked?

The SC has already ruled in the past that the President is not entirely immune from criminal cases. They won't reverse that. The biggest thing at stake is to what extent the President must answer to Congressional oversight. I doubt the SC will give Congress everything they want, but I also doubt they will give the Executive everything they want. They certainly won't buy the claims by Trump's team that Trump has temporary absolute immunity.

I'm afraid, however, that it won't matter much. The WH will continue bringing each and every individual case to the courts and will refuse to comply with court orders unless and until it gets to the SC. He isn't above the law. Functionally, however, he may be for now.
