Yes, they have. I'm talking about immunity from participating in criminal cases. Not necessarily immunity from criminal prosecution. They ruled this way against both Nixon and Clinton.

So, congress can impeach, just have to do it completely blind, and they cant impeach, without airtight proof of a crime, that they didn't investigate. BONKERS.

They are trying to build a case for total Presidential immunity that they never would have accepted before Trump and that they will quickly run away from the next time we have a Dem in office. They only like this kind of authoritarianism when their guy is in the Oval Office.

IMO it should be done routinely for all of them. My "private" finances can be demanded by the government for just about any reason at any time. Why should pols be treated any better?

Fortunately, The IRS, and Federal Law, disagree with your opinion:

"Upon written request from the chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means of the House of Representatives, the chairman of the Committee on Finance of the Senate, or the chairman of the Joint Committee on Taxation, the Secretary shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request, except that any return or return information which can be associated with, or otherwise identify, directly or indirectly, a particular taxpayer shall be furnished to such committee only when sitting in closed executive session unless such taxpayer otherwise consents in writing to such disclosure."

What is the legitimate legislative purpose of this?

Heck, JFK had hookers in the WH, and he's on the half dollar and has an airport named after him.

Congress has multiple reasons to obtain and review President Trump’s tax returns—reasons that are not only legitimate uses of its legislative powers, but also urgently needed, including:

    1. To determine if U.S. national security is at risk of being compromised by the president’s financial conflicts of interest
    2. To determine if Trump has conflicts of interests bearing on his trade and tariffs policies
    3. To determine whether the president is violating the U.S. Constitution by receiving benefits from foreign countries without Congress’ consent
    4. To determine whether he is benefiting from his tax policies despite his many public assertions to the contrary
    5. To determine whether the IRS is adequately auditing the president
    6. To inform the consideration of additional disclosure requirements for candidates and officeholders

For legislative purposes. You as a taxpayer has a right to privacy as to your most private financial affairs. They are not at the whim of a member of Congress who may be out for you for some reason.

You already have his financial disclosure forms what more are you claiming is in his tax returns?
You already have his financial disclosure forms what more are you claiming is in his tax returns?
You already have his financial disclosure forms what more are you claiming is in his tax returns?
You already have his financial disclosure forms what more are you claiming is in his tax returns? If he benefits from a tax policy THEY pass it's none of their business what are they going to do repeal it for everyone because he also benefits?
Call in the IRS commissioner and ask him about the proceedures. Have they ever done this about any other President?
They have the financial disclosure form he files every year they can vote additional disclosure and why would they need his tax returns as a private citizen before he was President?

They have to have cause. The FBI or you local police can just go and get you tax forms. You really want to put that power in the hands of partisan politicians? What happened to my right to privacy?

The SC did not rule that either Nixon of Clinton had to participate in any criminal case while they were in office. Clinton had a criminal case on the docket and the SC ruled it had to wait until Clinton was out of office. Nixon never had a criminal case against him.

It must have sailed right past you but all previous impeachments relied on investigations conducted and discoveries by other than Congress. Congress is not constitutionally permitted to carry on investigations just to see what they maybe possibly might find without any reasonable evidence, which is what the House did when all the outside investigations did not pan out.

Funny, that case was mentioned at least a half dozen times during the arguments, so who am I to believe here??

Not from the president and not from anybody without legislative purpose. Why do you think Nadler sang and danced and dropped seltzer down his pants around his rationalization of some obscure legislative purpose for getting Trump's tax records, though he couldn't dream anything up about the financial records.

    True, it's called an audit.

What the government cannot do is take your tax returns and make them public property for anyone and everyone to see.

I don't think we should see anyone's tax returns who runs for President or any office. What we should do is audit those in office that appear to be making millions of dollars through other means that enabled them to do so because of the office they hold. Anyone serving in the government, especially Congress and the Senate should be held to a higher standard than what they currently are.
