the government push since Nixon has been .... high carb, low fat .. that is the issue now

and of course the government push for highly processed vegetable oil (trans fat)

this push was for the health of mega food giants, not for the health of the people

'Locking down' should be voluntary. Some govt/public aid should be made available to those who are 'at risk' and 'essential services' like supermarkets, pharmacies and public transit should have segregated hours for 'at risk' people only to conduct their 'essential' business with a degree of isolation from those not 'at risk.' Everyone else should otherwise be free to go about their business as normal and protect themselves or not as they see fit.

new study for keto and coronavirus, be interesting to see the results

would also be interesting to know how many people already on keto even needed ventilation

    "Keto-diet for Intubated Critical Care COVID-19 (KICC-COVID19)"

    https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04358835

"The hypothesis of this study is that the administration of a ketogenic diet will improve gas exchange, reduce inflammation, and duration of mechanical ventilation. The plan is to enroll 15 intubated patients with COVID 19 infection and administer a 4:1 ketogenic formula during their intubation."

Clearly you are a pessimist and don’t see any value in encouraging good health in the midst of a pandemic because people are resistant to the idea. Should I tell such people they deserve the deleterious effects of C19 because they won’t take action to prevent those effects? Should I tell them they hate their families because they aren’t protecting themselves? So when should we expect “maskers” to stop trying to get people to wear masks who aren’t interested in doing so and never will be?

I haven’t much interest in government opinions on health. As @FreshAir points out, they are more often wrong than right.

I love the memes though. Especially the dogs...

agree on gov regulations, the problem is schools and other places that get federal funding like nursing homes have to follow those guidelines or lose funding

I do wonder how many would have been saved if nursing homes were not forced to feed seniors a high carb diet

    Nope!

    Realist

As I have said we have been trying to encourage better diet and exercise for how long?

How is it working out for America?

But as Freshair has pointed out a low carb diet is not that welcome to either big corporations or their clientele

Should we encourage the likes of McDonald to ditch the sugar laden buns and serve salads only?

Good points on diet and C19. Also good demonstration on how government is bipartisan in mucking up big things like decades of nutritional advice and regulation. It’s why I don’t ever want to be in a position where gov. can make decisions like that for me.

The inflammation from diet in relation to C19 and general health is something government and the traditional healthcare industry are going to have to address more comprehensively. I probably need to as well. I eat a lot of carbs because I’m active and need calories (and they are tasty), but I know I’d be better off cutting some out.

You are already on record as being a pessimist.

How long have we been telling people to wash their hands? Lots of people don’t. You still encourage hand washing to prevent infection. How long have we been telling sick people to stay home. A lot of people don’t. You still advocate for that.
About like Australia. Both countries are getting fatter and getting fatter faster! You are lagging simply because of the Vegemite advantage. :)
Agreed. But they can’t force me to eat their products. Only government is forcing anyone to eat them.

    Define “encourage”.

agree, and I would also like to see McDonald's go back to using lard in their friers vs these heavily processed seed oils that imo and harming people

~ We actually may not need a vaccine. It seems so far many tested have been exposed without ill effects. Herd immunity may be working. :aww:
~ U.S. government already does that. We are misinformed and kept in the dark on many issues. Our politicians say whatever they are told to say. It all depends on the agenda.

I venture outside sometimes when it's bright and sunny. They say your body produces vitamin D in the sunshine unless you have too much melanin in your skin. That would totally suck.

always been that way, 99%+ will be just fine.... not sure the Trump shutdown was ever needed

all the states that have had very low cases, did not benefit from the Trump shutdown

Can you cite Trump telling anyone to shut down?

If we had a better lockdown and did a lot more testing we could avoid more lockdowns in the future. A vaccine can help but I hope that we will have treatments for people with covid too.

Treatment will hopefully come before the vaccine - but yes - it is all or nothing with a lockdown - you don't go half way - that's not the way to do it .. better to not lock down like Sweden than go half way.

Sweden had a slightly higher rate of cases and death initially but they are way ahead in the herd immunity race so long term the overall rate will come down and may even be less.

Netflix will need to up their game if we have to lock down forever. I don't see either happening anytime soon.

So the headline was a big click-bait fraud then. Hardly fills you with confidence for the content does it?

They just pulled those numbers from their backsides though. They (vaguely) quoted effectiveness figures for flu vaccine but they're specifically poor because the influenza virus has a lot of strains which regularly mutate. Reports have suggested the the SARS-CoV-2 virus doesn't have anything like as high a mutation rate, meaning any vaccine has a much better chance of a higher effectiveness rate. I suspect the author was fully aware of this fact but had a line to spin.

The general idea that healthy eating and lifestyles - for all sorts of good reasons - aren't widely promoted is obviously ridiculous. It's a long-term and ongoing thing though. There would be little point in making it a major element of the immediate virus response.

Then I'd say the first 30 days of the shutdown can legitimately be 'Trumps Shutdown.'

Would you agree that all the places that enforced shutdown for far longer than 30 days despite the people protesting it (and Trump voicing support for the protesters) is owned by the mayors and governors who didn't follow the '30 days' part of the guidelines?
