Trump plans to send federal law enforcement personnel to Democratic-led U.S. cities

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Monday said he plans to send law enforcement personnel to some major U.S. cities, as a federal crackdown on anti-racism protests including use of unmarked cars and unidentified officers in camouflage in Portland, Oregon, angers people across the country.

“We’re sending law enforcement,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “We can’t let this happen to the cities.”

Trump, a Republican, mentioned New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore and Oakland, California, as possible places for sending in federal forces, noting the cities’ mayors are “liberal Democrats.” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot frequently blasts Trump on Twitter.

State and local leaders in Oregon, as well as members of Congress, meanwhile, have called for Trump to remove Department of Homeland Security officers from Portland.

What I wish that President Trump would say is

'All mayors and governors, the full force of the US Government is available for you to use to quell violent and criminal protests. ALL YOU HAVE to do is ASK. The Federal Government will not preempt your decisions. The only caveat is that the Federal Government will not use Federal Disaster funds for any rebuilding or relief effort should you decide to forgo assistance and you let your cities and communities be destroyed. To the business owners in these affected areas, it is UP to you to make your voices heard and to hold your elected officials responsible.'

I am missing some basic understanding as to which law gives the president the authority to deploy troops into these cities. I note the riots have long died down, and in Portland, there are reports of peaceful protesters being arrested.

 

Maybe they can beat on some more veterans who are protesting peacefully!

An awesome idea formed in Portland...

 

It's not the 'hijack' of our country, it's the restoration of civil freedoms(though as far as I'm aware, it has largely calmed down in Philadelphia.). We do not deserve to be locked away in our homes for an indefinite amount of time while being terrorized by street terrorists. If the government doesn't fulfill its responsibilities, then the American contract is null and void.
