Since then (and the GOP has been seriously leaning towards aspects of fascism, authoritarianism and theocracy since Reagan opened the tent flap and let them out) appointments to the circuit court and such by the GOP have been following the aforementioned trend. Civility regarding politics was rarely a real thing for the minorities of this country....now that the majority if feeling the pinch everyone is upset. We're not going to see another Sandra Day O'Connor for a long time if the GOP in it's current form has it's way.
