Showing America and it's politicians the way COSTCO announces raise in base pay of employees from $15 per hour to $16 per hour. At least one of our major retailers believes in sharing the wealth.

Showing politicians how to run a large organization with efficiency while valuing those who do the work has the same value as showing a fish how to climb a tree!

If they believed in sharing the wealth, they wouldn't charge people $110 a year just to shop there. That works out to about $11B per year before they sell their first item for the year.

As I said COSTCO is one retailer who is willing to cut their rank and file employees in on the profits, not just the executive staff.

Costco is just making business decisions. They have weighed the labor market against paying the workers and decided they are better off in the long run paying them more. However, Costco tends to operate in labor markets which pay more than the typical Sam's Club. Try living in $32,000 a year in California versus $28,000 per year in locations with a lower cost of living like in Kansas. You can bet that person in Kansas is better off.

I do remember hearing a Korean American lady (about 10 years ago) who said she had been working at Costco for several years and the pay was good but they worked her like Nazis (her exact words) and she finally got burnt out and couldn't work anymore.
She had to have been about 34 or 35 years old at the time so not an old woman. This was just after the Recession, so there was not another job lined up for her after she quit.

For whatever that anecdotal story is worth.

Should McDonalds start charging people $100 a year membership fee before they can come through the drive up window too?

And their prices will increase as a result. I stopped going to Costco about 6 years ago because despite their mantra of having cheaper goods than any other store I found that I was actually spending more there for food than I was at my local grocery store.

I kept watch on them however to see if prices went down. They never did. And now with this it will become even more expensive. So I'm now going to stop watching them as with this I know I'm never going back. Just not worth it.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here considering that Costco operates in both California and Kansas, and an employee in either state would be better off making $32,000 a year versus $28,000 a year

Note Sams is forty five dollars less than half. I wondered why my daughter dropped her Costco membership, now I know. It's too damn expensive. Screwing over your customer base to earn praise from leftists probably isn't a sound business model.

Not if they can't make enough money to keep the doors open. Why pay 110 for the privilege paying more than you'd pay somewhere else for the same goods and services?

Thank you for providing this perfect example of why we don't need the government involved in dictating the policies of private companies.

The dollar will stretch farther in areas with a lower cost of living though. Also, depending on taxes, it's not necessarily true that making the higher amount is advantageous.

So Costco shouldn’t raise pay because there might be someone really bad at running a small business???

The point is just what I said. The cost of living in the states where Costco operates is considerably higher than where Sam's Club operates. They have to pay more in order to get their employees. It was not a since of responsibility like 61falcon said.

Scams Club and Costs More, been to both on one of their "try us free" days, left empty handed. Thanks Mom, for teaching me how shop wisely.

I have a plus membership which is $100 at sams but because it comes with cash back "rewards" it really more than pays for itself as I usually get between $150 to $200 back every year as store credit plus everything has free shipping with it. Otherwise I wouldn't be a member there at all. I started off as a plus 1 on somebody else's membership.

I do not care what they do. They have already replaced cashiers with touch screens. I do not eat fast food, but do spend a lot of money at Costco. I went in for batteries last week and spent $450.00

That's just it; it's always for now. How much did that giant raise do for all those cashier's that no longer have jobs at costco? I wonder who they've decided the no longer need now?
